Just a small warning if youre considering A40 Trs.

OnionRings

Dont. Thats the whole post. Firmware wont update, actual nightmare horror story, same issue for 5+ years if you look on reddit. Probably just gonna commit to the DT 990 pros and an AMP.

I'd go for a Sennheiser HD560S rather than DT990, better sound, better build and no fixed cable

I've heard DT990 is a very bright headphone, but I've never listened to them.  I do know that when a headphone is super bright it can be unusable; IE the shp9500 without a dac/amp.

I would strongly recommend the Rode NTH-100 or NTH-100m, they're amazing headphones at a great price and sound good on basically any source, no reason for an amp or dac.

Oh gosh, make sure you save your receipt and unbox it nicely if you're going for the DT 990.

Those are some bright headphones and it may take a while for you to determine if you like that or not.

I honestly don't know what bright means in audio, I'm very new. All I know is they seem highly recommended and reviewed. I do know that they are apparently best with worn ear pads.

Bright means the high frequencies - the treble - is emphasized. Typically it results in a headphone with "more detail" but it also makes it more exhausting for your ears. Like a violin or crash cymbal or female vocals would be in the higher region.

You ever listen to a video and the "sss" sound is really harsh? Imagine it harsher because your headphones are bright.

I love Super Eyepatch Wolf's videos, but his voice HURTS me when I listen to him on my drives.

By contrast, headphones are warm and more laidback when the lower region is emphasized. And then there's U shaped, V shaped, etc.

Bah, I don't use headsets at all, all my cans are wired and I listen to music and game with the use of a DAC combo. I don't have any specific sound preference, which explains the number of cans I have, generally like with good mids, tighter bass, and a treble sparkle as opposed to sizzly.

Oh yeah, I do sorta own a 'headset' though I don't see a mic port, may have built-in mic though I dunno as I use it as a w/l headphone. It's a Creative SXFI Theater which I use to watch movies with, excellent sorta 'room feel' sound in that the dialog isn't so centered, the sound in a movie is more spread out with SXFI enabled.

Oh,and are the 990 pros still bright with worn pads?

I dont want to get headaches I just want good audio,I do enjoy some bass too so if they are too bright will that effect the bass?

DT990 are very bright no matter what you do tbh, you might end up really liking them to be fair. I'm not a fan of most beyerdynamic headphones (but my ears are also very treble sensitive, so take this with a grain of salt) if you do end up liking the comfort and just want less intense treble then the DT880 are great headphones for the same/ similar price as DT990.

Like @Cocococo said, try them out before being scared off. Assuming the retailer you are purchasing from has a good return policy.

Otherwise, the DT880 is a good middle-ground, and my personal favourite is the DT 770 Pro specifically the 80 Ohm version for the fun bass, and being closed-back for sound isolation.

idk your budget, but there is also the Sennheiser HD560S
https://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-Over-Audiophile-Headphones/dp/B08J9MVB6W/

Also, you don't need a headphone amplifier for any of these mentioned headphones.

If you're in the US and you "feel" like your motherboard audio is not good enough, then you can pick up the $9 Apple USB-C dongle. I use them for my DT770 Pro. It's technically only a DAC, but the output power is enough for all of these.

I use amazon mostly, so whatever their return policy is. I was also recommended the HD560S by someone else on here I believe, how would you stack them up against the DTs? Just warmer?
