Old labtop HP pavilion zv6000

Trying to help a family member get there old labtop working. It seems to turn on but screen remains black. Family member want to see if old family pictures are on this computer. Is there a way to fix the screen or would be easier to pull harddrive or find a way to connect to a different screen? I don't see an hdmi port.

Have you resetted the CMOS?

Don't tell me to upgrade. I would've done so if I could.

it's better to just pull the drive, put it in a USB enclosure, and plug it into a machine that is not 18 years old.
