Any game recommendations for the young

Jinchu

I'm curious about how old are the youngest players (children, own or otherwise) you have played with?

What games have you played? Was it good experience?

Randomly met a 10 or 11 year old kid in Hell Let Loose, it was a terrible experience to have him in my squad.

Helldivers 2 would be a fun game with younger kids. I remember loving Devil May Cry when I was around 10 (with respect to hyper violence, but not towards humans).

You're just killing giants bugs and robots, so there's no morality issue of killing people and seeing blood and gore. Well, your fellow Helldivers can also die pretty badly, but it's amusing.

I tried playing Space Marine 2 last Friday and I refunded it after 80 minutes. I'm not interested in serious shooters after playing 220hrs of HD2 lol.

Vampire Survivors has a co-op mode now.

Uhhhh, there's always the classic Rocket League and Minecraft.

Hell, I've met so many coworkers in their late-30s/early-40's that spoil their teenage kids with RTX 4080 desktop computers just so they can play Minecraft.

i grew up with educational games, and the kid's classics like putt-putt and freddi fish. that was in the days of single computer households and no internet, though...

on a more modern selection:

minecraft

trailmakers

scrap mechanic

there's also a WIDE selection of cartoony tycoon-style games that are plenty of fun for all ages, just to name a few: two point hospital, voxel tycoon, planet coaster, etc.

oh, and special mention to zeepkist, because silly racing games have been pulled to a new level.

Kids are always going to find a way.

The least you can do is supervise or be a part of the conversation so that it can be addressed in a healthy way. I'm not recommending him to let the kids play Grand Theft Auto or Call of Duty (e.g. the infamous airport shooting in Modern Warfare 2). But there's a difference between the violence and maturity of The Last of Us and the violence and "maturity" of like.. er... God of War 1-3.

The same applies to alcohol, drugs, the birds and the bees, etc.

kids are gonna find a way, so let's just introduce them into gore at as young of an age as possible?

yes there's a time and place for bending the rules.. that being if the kid shows interest, do it with them rather than say hard no and have them do it behind your back... but "they will find a way" is such a huge straw man it can literally be used as an argument to give *anything* to children. on that note...

so we should just recommend parents feed their kids alcohol? or should we wait until the kid is of an age where they get an interest to try a beer? perhaps we should see the south park "stupid spoiled whores" episode as a hallmark of sex ed?

i totally agree that the whole PEGI 18 thing should not refer to an exact age.. but it is an indication of the level of maturity that one might need to grasp the concepts of a game. *recommending* people ignore this all together is just terrible parenting, but suggesting flexibility given the maturity of the kid is probably a very productive thing, given the parents have any clue at all. just dont get the two mixed up.. like you seem to be doing.

My kids (aged 9, 11, 13) play Roblox + Minecraft + Tocaworld for the younger two girls and Minecraft, Fortnite and Apex for the 13yr old boy.

I play a fair bit of Fortnite and Minecraft with my kids and it's decent fun and a good learning experience for them.

On other games (i.e. without my kids there), I've seen some 14-15yr olds on Rust and DayZ - some are just brain-dead toxic nutcases (on Rust especially!) and others are pretty balanced.

These days, I tend to play mostly chilled out PVE or hyper-difficult PVE servers.... so it filters out the more toxic behaviour as those people to be more focussed on instant gratification... there's some kids (around that 14-15 age) on one of the Rust PVE servers I play on and they're really decent players and a good part of the community.

I mean if we're going to ignore all common sense and use extreme examples, why bother discussing this.

Anyways, we don't even know what age the OP's kids are (if they're even talking about their own kids)

If we're talking like 8 years old, then omg absolutely don't do HD2.

If we're talking 10 years old, then go for it. That's 5th grade. Everyone is a bratty asshole with a somewhat-formed personality at that age. They can handle the maturity and nuances of "big bug go splat" "robot go boom"

They sure as hell already know what guns are because of Fortnite.

this is the internet, in a format that is designed around future discoverability. if age is not defined, assume you either need to define it yourself, or assume 'safe for all ages'.

Age 5-10

-Putt putt franchise (mostly "enters the race)

-Tonka raceway

-Star wars math: Jabba's game Galaxy

-Word rescue (literally hundreds of hours between SWM and WordRescue)

-Lego Island 2 *something-something brickster*

-MS Paint

-Various Plug-n-play tv arcade systems

 Those graduated to: (age 7-12)

Spoiler

Various Pokemon games across GBA, GC, and Wii.

-Tonka rescue (GC)

-Metabots Infinity (GC)

-Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games (Beijing)

-Sonic adventure 2 Battle (GC)

-Wii sports (obviously)

-mario Strikers Charged (was great up until the Wii remote started drifting)

And then once we got our Xbox 360: (age 12-15)

Spoiler

Halo: Reach

Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit

Forza Horizon/2

Forza Motorsport 4

COD: Black ops (zombies mostly)

(I'm sure I'm missing one or two)

All while also having lightsaber duels outside, manhunt in our wild backyard, extensive bike-riding and drag races down the long driveway (50m), as well as a TON of scrabble, monopoly, LEGO, K'nex, and Family Reading hour every night

Needless to say: growing up, my brother and I were never in a state of craving stimulation, there was always SOMETHING for us to do. I remember one time as like an 8-yr old complaining I was bored, and my mom looks over to me and goes "dude, you have tons of computer games, a whole basement full of books, lots of Hess trucks, bins of LEGO and K'nex, multiple game systems, and a whole outside: I find it hard to believe that you have nothing to cure boredom. If none of those sound interesting, I can give you scavenger hunt tasks around the house."

experience differs, no matter the game,

some kids can be well behaved, some can be hardcore gamers, and some can be the same teammate you don't want to, whiny bag of stones you have to listen to/mute and carry..

The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) rates GTA 5 as M for Mature, designed for players aged 17 and up. It warns that game features blood and gore, violence, mature humor, nudity, strong language, sexual content, and use of drugs and alcohol.

I didn't mention the age in the intro, but I was asking about playing with kids. I'm not gonna play GTA or Dead by Daylight with kids. I'm not surprise people in the internet are suggesting that. Actually I'm surprised that Baldur's Gate III did not get on the list. (No I'm not playing that with kids either)

Your post is confusing little bit, your title asks what games would we recommend with kids,

and then you vaguely ask how old were the youngest players we played with,

because that could mean playing on alone, and getting matchmade with/against young kids on the multiplayer game.

What kind of games? Multiplayer? Co-op singleplayer? Co-op multiplayer? Team based? Else?

a fair question. I'm asking about experiences people have had.

e.g. Someone had played team based multiplayer with a random 10 year old and had a bad time or that some really enjoyed playing Minecraft with teenager. That is something I was looking for in this thread.

well, if someone's like me and plays online games alot, they will witness the entire spectrum,

intelligence, knowledge, behaviour, certain emotions, quirks, etc. isn't age restricted in the end.

Sometimes kids are annoying, pain, sometimes you're glad you got these kids that play the game 24/7 and are good at the game instead of some random adult who's just playing ranked for some reason after their shift. And things like that.

I've had guy who's approx 12 or younger to play on my PC because family/friends come visit, the only game he played on my PC was World of Tanks and Track Mania. Knows controls, isn't anything special skill wise, but I'd sometimes see improvement, and definitely determination regardless of how well/badly things are. (like trying to beat my ghost in TM, or a certain medal AI)

If you're talking about games to play with children, you could probably put in sims like MS Flight Simulator down there. They're pretty chill and can be played with multiple planes in multiplayer and all. Even fun when played single, although gets redundant at the 100th hour very much so, for me at least but I'm guessing that would be the case for a lot of people, as all you do is to fly around and well... fly around to no end and do nothing else.

As for children in online gaming, yes plenty of 12 year olds exist in the realm of FPS gaming. Has been that way for ages now.

If I'm duo'ing in like COD, I don't want to hear a child so I'd prefer someone more mature in their voice regardless of how good of a player or person they are. It's just that I prefer playing with people of my age level (30 or over) when I'm duo'ing, or trio or quads whatever.
