Viewer facing personnel and fitness

cmndr

I'll preface this with... there's a lot of trade-offs and that at some level it's not GREAT if LMG polices their employees' lives too much.

-----

In Hollywood image is everything. Actors will go to great lengths to achieve a certain look.
One thing that I've noticed is that some (not all) of the LMG staff that regularly appears on camera is... getting older and out of shape. The older part can't be helped. The out of shape bit can to some degree.

Is LMG doing anything to encourage their on camera talent to work on health/fitness/appearances?
This can include things like providing healthy lunches/supplements, encouraging gym use/exercise and encouraging good sleep hygiene (episode idea - using smart home tech to improve sleep).

A handful of relatively small nudges can improve health and potentially help captivate audiences a bit better.

Some context - in the past year I'm down from ~17% bodyfat (could only barely see my abs) to around 8% (as per caliper - and the veins on my arms now look like freeway maps) and my lifts are up (some might be creatine). My face looks better. I pass for being around 22-23 again and had someone ask if I was an intern. I'm pushing 40. I did NOT need to fundamentally shift things in my life (I eat a bit more protein and have protein powder now and I only take a bite or two of free doughnuts instead of having 4; and I weight lift at much LOWER intensity and at higher volume, so maybe 30 extra minutes a week)

Not only is it not great, it could be flat out against Canadian laws. If my boss started suggesting how I live my personal life, i'd have some choice words for them. As long as it isn't affecting my ability to do my job, what I do on my own time is not their business.

As a gym goer and relatively fit person myself, the absolute worst are sanctimonious health nuts.

Hollywood stars have certainly lost and gained weight and done all kinds of things to play specific roles. But LTT is not a Hollywood movie production.

They're nerds talking about tech. It's one thing for LTT to have rules in place that asks for them to be presentable (i.e. dress code), but another to inject themselves into their teams personal lives and demand they work out.

I'm fine with a company encouraging a healthy lifestyle by offering discounts on gym memberships, healthy food options and even providing access to doctor's checkups. But at the end of the day, it needs to be voluntary. It's up to each person to decide whether to accept any of these offers.

You do realize all those Hollywood people use that new weightloss drug and aren't necessarily healthy?

If you have a hard time watching a tech channel not living up to your beauty standards, watch something else.

Eating processed ptotein powder isn't necessarily healthy. You know how that is made?

True.
Though, to be fair some have done the opposite and got in better shape than they were a couple of years ago.

Valid question.

I see comments like "if you don't like it, don't watch,"
which is unfortunate because it shuts down any opportunity for meaningful discussion.

Can you show examples? Like which one of the main hosts looks like they are not in shape? In terms of bodyshaming culture, imo LMG is on the better side. They show the classic nerd culture with big people who don't show that they DO workout. Like, Linus used to be the odd-one with badminton keeping him in shape (and lifting babies when he didn't have time to practice). They recently made BTS video where Linus beat Dennis in combat sports.

To me it would look very fake if suddenly there was tons of people showing off some latest Tiktok bedy image trend. Like, its many times noted how bad those trends are to growing youth. To me LMG with their content shows that you don't need to focus on how you look to be appreciated. LMG hosts are appreciated because they know about tech and can tell about it without stuttering or just reading the script.

And if you want other tech gods who are the perfect body image... wait, no... these people???

As someone that dropped over 100 lbs since March (actually weighed yesterday below 200 lbs for the first time since high school), it’s more so a mental battle than it is physical.

With how easily accessible calorie dense foods are, and reliance on driving to, for some people, literally be able to do anything, most people need to put in a very deliberate effort to get into shape. This means going out of your way to perform an exercise routine outside your daily tasks, and dedicating effort to ramping up your cooking skills, and committing to these for the rest of one’s life. Unless you actually want to do exercise, this naturally takes time away from doing the things you like to do.

As you can imagine, it takes strong motive to overcome the mental barriers, and oftentimes, not even health is a sufficient motivator.

And at least in the US, government and many corporations seems quite uninterested in reducing resistance to health/fitness in any meaningful way (less car dependency, higher quality food at competitive prices), so it is 100% up to me to do so instead.

My eyes see the past…

My camera lens sees the present…

I don't think employers should jump into an employee's life like that. An employer could have a gym membership discount or something, but I don't think it should go any further than that.

Those things are actually quite common in some places, as added benefits beyond the fruit basket and free coffee. Company I work at even has its own gym (haven't used it yet, though), plus we have mandatory yearly medical checks. The latter is more about workplace safety though (lab and production site), rather than meant as a benefit.

With something like the badminton center (no clue about the status of that, don't follow that) they could probably set something up like a company discount. Being a still relatively small company I don't expect them getting any big preferential deals with other places easily, though.

In any case, in my opinion this is nothing that should really concern the viewer, as that part of the business is between corporate and employees, (current and prospective). So as long as the people in front of the camera are feeling comfortable and no obviously unhealthy habits etc. are promoted, who are we to care. We are just here for the infotainment tech videos after all (and the occasional drama, everyone needs guilty pleasures).

One of the weirdest fucking posts I have ever read.

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

smart home tech to improve sleep

Ew, I couldn't sleep for a minute knowing some corporation is tracking whether I sleep or not 🪦

Same with lights, you know there are kids who are afraid of dark so can only sleep if a nightlight is on? I wasn't one, I asked my parents to turn off everything and shut the door and always felt asleep in minutes.

I don't actively watch the channel except for the PC related stuff like "building the lowest rated PC" or "I hired randoms...". It's not a gymbros channel where everyone is just showing off their muscles in tight shirts or crop tops.

Also you can be ripped and it wouldn't be noticeable if you wore baggy clothes, I absolutely despise tight clothing and don't show off even though you could say I'm pretty fit with well defined muscles, not "visible veins" kind of ripped though (not my thing) but you can't tell unless I wear a sundress or tank top and my arms are exposed.

There are guys at the gym you could say they're fat but they're powerlifters, it's all about being strong, I lift too but don't want to gain a lot of weight just for a better PR or egolifting, gotta keep a balance.

Caroline doesn't need to hear all this, she's a highly trained professional.

I understand where you're coming from, but personally I think that:

LMG should have basically no say in how or what their employees do on their spare time. I think their already overreacting contracts are bad. I can't imagine how bad it would be if they started imposing fitness goals for the purpose of having their employees looking good.

With that being said, I think an employer caring for their employees' health is good. I don't necessarily agree that it's because they need to look good on-camera, but things like giving employees incientives or help staying in shape is good. It's not about making people look good, but to increase general health. My employer gives me about 400 dollars a year that I can spend on health-related things. Buying equipment is not allowed, but so far this year I've used some of it for a gym membership, a massage and a subscription to a fitness tracking app.

My SO also gets money (although a smaller amount) but also gets 1 hour a week of paid time that they can spend working out. So once a week, they end work 1 hour early and exercise while retaining full pay.

I am all for those kinds of benefits for employees. They are voluntary and exist for the purpose of increasing well-being, which benefits both the employee and employer.

I am not sure what you are talking about.

In what way is eating protein powder not healthy? I guess you could argue it doesn't automatically make you healthy, but it's not like it's harmful. I don't see how the process of making it matters.

For those that do care, they take the liquid that remains from cheese making (during the curding process), heat it up, then filter it or do an ion exchange in order to concentrate and purify it. Then they let the mixture dry so that it becomes a powder. It's basically just concentrated, liquid cheese.

I don't want to say anything potentially mean about any one person. Especially since I generally like the personality and work of the LMG staff.

I can cite some tech influencers who ARE in solid shape - MKBHD (Marques Brownlee) and Austin Evans

These people are NOT primarily fitness nuts but... you can tell that they are proactive in their health. This even shows up in skin quality as well.

They are both slim/slender body structure. So like Riley and Linus from LMG. People who are more average body structure, like Alex or James, haven't imo changed that much. Not at least to prompt this kind of post.

Which I view is bit of bodyshaming since you are questioning what they do in personal life and show at you on screen. There are body types where being in good shape doesn't show outside.

I don't understand why this is even allowed to be discussed. This is no one's business but the person who works there. Skinny doesn't equal healthy and more heavy-set doesn't mean unhealthy. That's not how it works. This thread is pointless.
