How do I know if my LGA 775 CPU (Core2Quad) is running correctly?

Hello, everyone!

I am occasionally upgrading older PCs with better CPUs. The Socket 775 was unusually long-lived for Intel standards and as such, there are A LOT of mainboards for the platform. With that come microcodes that may or may not fully support a CPU, or support it or not support it at all.

My question is how do I know whether a CPU I slotted in and that boots is supported fully and works correctly?

I once saw a Fujitsu PC that ran with a Core2Duo, but wouldn't boost as high until the correct microcode/bios version was installed. But is there a program that lets me confirm the correct support completely, regardless of the motherboard vendor?

Thanks!

You're already plugging this in and booting it successfully?

Just look in task manager at the speed when stressing it to watch and see if it reaches the right speeds.

Matching the CPU by the chipset is somewhat reliable.

The earliest boards (945/955) don't even support C2D/C2Q, so you have to check that first.

965 & 975 should support the first C2D/C2Q CPUs (Conroe & Kentsfield; 6000).

G/P/X 3x and 4x can usually support anything with a BIOS update (Wolfdale & Yorkfield; 8000 and 9000).

These boards didn't have the locked ME that we have now, so unrecognised CPUs can often boot just fine. They are very uncomplicated though compared to what we have now, so just check the clocks and you're most of the way there.

CPU-Z https://www.cpuid.com/downloads/cpu-z/cpu-z_2.10-en.exe and HWiNFO64: https://www.hwinfo.com/download/

in General HWiNFO64 will show every sensor your motherboard has, it's a great tool.

you can run the stress test CPU-Z has and check your effective clock speed in HWiNFO64 to see if it boosts right.

CPU-Z can load 1 2 and 4 cores

and you can Run Cinebench R15 aswell to see if your scores lineup with other Core2Quad similiar cpu
