DisplayPort sucks...

Renegade605

So, DisplayPort has always been flaky, and that seems like a widely known fact, but power cycling my display has always fixed connectivity issues. Until now.

I have a 3070 with 3xDP + 1xHDMI connections. I have 2x1080p60 monitors with HDMI only and a 1440p165 monitor with HDMI, DP, and Type-C (but it only supports over 1080p60 on DP). For years I've occasionally come back to the PC to find the main monitor (DP) showing no signal, but a power cycle (or a couple) has always brought it back. Even more frequently (almost always) I find the windows have rearranged themselves while I'm gone, indicating the main display has disconnected and reconnected on its own. One of the HDMI monitors is connected via a DPtoHDMI cable.

Today, I came back to a No Signal message and couldn't get it back. I tried everything: Power cycles, unplug and replug, different port on the GPU, restart display driver, reinstall display driver, but nothing. Throughout all of this the display is detected (including the model) in Windows 10, but shows as disabled (no reason specified) and won't enable. I thought I'd try connecting it by HDMI so I unplug one of the side monitors and connect to the main with it, and it works. I reconnected the DP cable and that also works.

Here's the really weird part: I disconnect the HDMI cable, and DP stops working too. When both cables are connected the monitor works, with DP as the input, at 1440p165. But as soon as the HDMI is unplugged, DP stops working too and the display says no signal.

So what the heck? Searching only turns up generic "try a different cable" etc. listicles. Has anyone ever seen anything like this before and how did you fix it?

More importantly, why is DisplayPort such a steaming pile of garbage (especially since it's the "better" tech)?

I fully expect this will correct itself before anyone can reply to this anyway, which is why I'm posting it now instead of forgetting about it for the next 6 months until it happens again.

Considering how many computers at my work not only run Displayport, but those DP to DVI (and in two cases, VGA) adapters, I haven’t run into any problems. Closest thing to a problem was the damned ambiguity present in the USB-C standard, and how some ports may or may not support DP.

I did run into an issue with HDMI recently though. Had this damnable overscan issue when connecting my laptop to the TV, when everything was working just peachy the prior day. I swapped cables around, the laptop output worked and scaled perfectly, and the other device (PS3) gave me jack-all. Was time for that cable to be taken put back.

My eyes see the past…

My camera lens sees the present…

Sounds like some kind of hardware defect on your card or monitor, not a general issue with how DP works.
