Older console component sources to newer TV?

tinpanalley

Can anyone recommend any way to get PS2, XBOX, and Wii component video and audio outputs to be used with my new TV which annoyingly only has HDMI?
Do you put adapters on the consoles themselves or just run the cables through a component-HDMI converter device?

I was about to get a 10 year old receiver that has component and other analog inputs thinking they'd use the HDMI out but apparently they don't so the receiver is probably of no use to me.

I use this product. Its an PS2 to HDMI adapter, works really well!

I can play my favorite ps2 games ( Champions of norrath / Champions of norrath: Return to arms )

Dont know about Xbox and Wii unfortunately.

For PS2 and XBOX, LevelHike makes some decent direct adapters that plug directly into the console and have an HDMI port on the other end. I don't think they do any real upscaling outside just converting to a 720p signal so modern TVs will accept it. I don't use my PS2 one on the regular as I use my main PS2 with a CRT over S-Video but my spare PS2 is hooked up to an LCD with the adapter. It works well enough for the testing and other junk I do with it. Looks like ass compared to something like a RetroTink but it's a lot cheaper, a lot more brain-dead to set up, and a damn sight better than plugging Composite directly into a modern TV. I haven't noticed any bad input lag either. Here's their store page on Amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/stores/LevelHike/Homepage/page/A1D174B9-1B4E-4309-8178-3EDA9053B254

As for Wii, there's a lot of cheap adapters out there. Some better, some worse from what I gather. They're usually labeled as Wii2HDMI. Here's the one I have:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0895NQHV2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1

I can't really say much for it. I only use my Wii to rip GameCube and Wii games to play on Dolphin. It works, and again it's infinitely better than just plugging Composite into a modern TV.

Of course, if you have deep pockets as well as the desire to learn and the time to fiddle with settings to get the best output, then things like the various RetroTink upscalers, OSSC, or similar devices are an option.
