Need help upgrading prebuilt with serious CPU bottleneck

Budget (including currency): $1200

Country: United States

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Switch Emulation, FF7R

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): I have an HP Omen 880-130 that was given to me by a (very generous) friend a few years ago. I have since added some high-end upgrades, including an RTX 4090, PSU, and more RAM, but it's still rocking an i7-8700K. I know it's a bottleneck, but the mobo seems to not support other CPUs, at least based on what I've found online. I'm willing to replace the mobo, CPU, and RAM, but don't want to spend that kinda cash to find it's not compatible. It's apparently uATX, but I don't know if there is any proprietary nonsense happening. Any thoughts on a route I could go?

Buy a new case, then upgrade the mobo/cpu/RAM.

You can afford to buy a 4090, the rest of the machine is less than HALF that.  Pony up 🙂

I 100% agree...

If you can't afford the rest, this is a good leason to be learned. The savings on buying a 4080 instead of a 4090 would have gotten you a full platform upgrade AND a 4080, which would almost certianly result in better performance in *almost* every game than a 4090 on a 8700k.

7800X3D

Gigabyte B650 Elite or Gaming or Pro

G. Skill Flare X5 2x16GB 6000MHz CL30

All set.

I'm thinking that I might just go full send on the CPU and get a 7950X3D, the difference in price is less than $200 and the boost in performance seems to be substantial. All in I would be around $800, which I could live with.

If you are primarily gaming then the boost is iffy at best. Seems to be generally -2 to +2 fps at 4K on most games. For $200 that seems like a terrible deal.

If you primarily do rendering, then I can see it. But not for gaming...

There is no boost if just gaming.   Hopefully you meant something else.

I am concerned you don't fully understand PC components.

I understand PC components just fine, and I knew when I got the 4090 that it would be bottlenecked. In all honesty, I was planning to put it in an Alienware Aurora R13, but it didn't fit in the case (by the tiniest margin). It fit in this older gaming rig, but I knew I was leaving a ton of performance on the table. I want to correct that, and I can afford upgrades. I just want to get something that will work with the rest of the system without building a whole new rig.

Right so what did you mean by the boost seems to be substantial?  The 7950x3d over the 7800x3d?

For gaming there is no benefit of the 7950x3d.

Either works with the rest of the system.   Just making sure you understand the 7950x3d is actually worse for gaming, but you get what you want.

I've relayed the facts. All I can do 👍

I don't just game on this, I also use it as my Plex server and do a lot of encoding on it when I rip blu-ray discs and sometimes light video editing.

Moving goal posts.
