Oculink is cool and all, but I don't think its necessary. I do wish it became more of a standard, but just exacerbates the issues with eGPUs in general with a lack of hotswapping. There's also the nature of oculink not being designed as a high insertion rate connection compared to type-c.

Especially if Thunderbolt 5 is about to double bandwidth, oculink might end up obsolete for eGPUs. Even then with my setup using USB4, I rarely see scenarios where I'm dramatically bandwidth limited, even while trying to maintain +240 fps at 4K.

I too wish oculink will be updated to the newest PCIE generation.

Mobile CPUs are getting really powerful and efficient

PCIE gen 4 x8 is probably all we need to get all the performance out of high end GPUs with video feedback at the same time. (the CPU is going to be the limiting factor before saturating the PCIE bandwidth)

So we can have something like Zen 5 (Strix Point) tablets, handhelds and mini PCs that can be hooked up to an external 4080 and the gaming experience will be close enough to a full sized 4080 desktop
