Creating my first home server

I Am creating a home server/lab at my parents house I’m 15. 
 

Planing to have

     1. Networking 

     2. Data storage

     3. Home security   

     4. Home automation

     5. Other

Planing to use 

     1. Game server hosing

      2. Backing up data

 

the rack I’m using is the 12RU Shock Mount Rack, 550mm Deep by TITTAN AV https://www.titanav.co/products/titan-av-19-12ru-shock-mount-rack-system-550mm-deep

 

Can I please have tips for buying items 

what I can use it for

os and dockers for different thing 

brands to watch out for

What do you want it to do? Host media with Plex or Jellyfin? Host enough VMs to simulate a small business server deployment? Run a Minecraft server? Each of those use cases calls for different hardware.

 

Buying hardware then figuring out what to do with it is putting the cart before the horse. It's very easy to waste money on the wrong things that way.

starting with a rack is really gonna limit your options, also without knowing a budget, literally anything fits your usecase
