Computer freeze, fan goes 100% speed, sound kept playing

DeLuN

I built this computer recently. Once in a while, the PC will stop responding. When it happens, the screens turns black. Some fan (CPU?) goes really loud. I notice what ever sound is playing (youtube/game) will keep playing. Interestingly, youtube play long enough where it should have fetch for more data, meaning network is still working. The game dialog/music kept playing. I tried to test if the PC is still responsive by firing a gun in game but I didn't hear the gun fire noise. It seems to happen more often in Cyberpunk 2077 compare to other games but I also spend more time playing Cyberpunk 2077. It may happen while I am not doing anything intensive too. The event viewer shows "The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly." which isn't super helpful. Seems like Windows doesn't create a dump until the PC resets on it own. It takes roughly 30 seconds from the screen turning black to PC resetting on it own.

I have tried the following:

  • uninstalled Nvidia app (I notice a lot of Nvidia apps errors in event viewer)
  • uninstalled (using ddu) and reinstall video card driver
  • reset BIOS setting (I had EXPO and precision boost overdrive on)
  • upated BIOS
  • checked the CPU and GPU temperature (nothing concerning)
  • unplugged my second SSD
  • reset video card driver by pressing shift + control + win + B when it happens

System info:

  • I installed Windows 10 x64. The Windows 10 image is downloaded from Microsoft.
  • Age of system: 4 months
  • Age of OS installation: 4 months
  • CPU model: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D 4.2 GHz 8-Core Processor
  • Video Card: PNY VERTO OC GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER 16 GB Video Card
  • MotherBoard: Gigabyte B650 GAMING X AX V2 ATX AM5 Motherboard (latest BIOS)
  • Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA 1300 G2 1300 W (from an old rig)
  • rest of the spec: here
  • System Manufacturer: custom build

Try disabling the MultiPlane Overlay MPO.

Use the latest AMD chipset drivers, and download them directly from AMD.

Disable hybrid sleep / fast startup.

Check for any firmware updates for the SSD-s (Samsung Magician).

Run sfc /scannow to check your Windows files.

Check your disks with Hard Disk Sentinel.

Check your RAM with PassMark memtest86 or Memtest86+.

This is typically a RAM error,  what kind of RAM is installed currently, exactly?

I don't see if you've installed AMD chipset drivers? It's mandatory on 3D chips

  1. I install the AMD chipset driver via Gigabyte control center. I will look into getting the driver directly from AMD.
  2. I already installed and updated firmware with Samsung Magician. I bought the SSD knowing that it will use the system ram for caching and probably need Samsung Magician to work correctly.
  3. I recall running memory test somehow. Maybe with tools in BIOS?
  4. I will look into MultiPlane Overlay MPO, hybrid sleep / fast startup and Hard Disk Sentinel. I don't know what they are yet.

The ram are G.Skill Flare X5 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR5-6000 CL36 Memory. The are in the second and fourth ram slot from the CPU.
