Best AMD GPU? ($500 or less) for Linux PC

I am building a PC to do some programming, gaming, and other stuff using openSUSE Linux as the operating system.

 

Motherboard: ASUS ROG Strix B550-F Gaming Wi-Fi

 

What are the highest spec GPU's for $500 or less can you recommend for Linux PC builds? You guys know a lot more about graphics cards than I do, I just want something that just works in Linux.

I dont know about Linux, but the 7800XT is the best AMD card for 500 greenbacks

Yeah as @Salted Spinach said, 7800XT, but what will you do with it ?

If it's retrogaming or indie games you don't need that much, and for 3D stuff NVidia is much better

This.  If you can find $30 more though, the 7900GRE is an option.

 

Though I am uncertain what Linux has to do with a GPU.  Do some GPUs not work well with linux?

There is an unholy saga of getting GPUs to work well on Linux. I *think* that saga has largely come to a close though

Not really. Was always just peripherally aware and seen people complain. Can't quickly find a good rundown though. If you know any *nix greybeards, I'm sure they can tell stories

Nvidia has not played nice with Linux for years due to drivers being fully proprietary and Nvidia not caring enough to optimize for linux. many OOB issues running Nvidia cards and not all features work fully linux side.

 

Though this IS finally changing as Nvidia has confirmed they're finally moving to an open-source kernel level driver model soon for Linux.

The reason I'm choosing AMD is because of that very reason, mostly because I don't want to lose my sanity installing Nvidia drivers on Linux.
