Capping FPS bellow refresh rate but how much ?

Is there any more advantages over reducing frame pacing when limiting FPS to monitor's refresh rate ? I Playing on my TV which has 60Hz with FreeSync. And when I enable V-sync, and then set 60fps limit in Adrenaline Software (Frame limiter, no Chill) then imagine become way smoother.

 

But I heard that some people was saying, that also it should be limited like 1 FPS below 59fps ?

 

With properly working Freesync, capping FPS below 60hz does it matter at all ? Or it's only for V-sync only monitors.

 

I don't see much of the difference when I set to 59-58, but there is a difference when just cap FPS.

 

So how it is with this capping FPS below refresh rate ?

Turn off v-sync (you don't need it since you have freesync), and limit the framerate to about 2 fps lower than max refresh. At best use the game's inbuilt framerate limiter. The next best option is Riva Tuner.

I've largely only seen this being used for OLEDs, which can have issues with overdriving the refresh rate. I simply overdrive by 1.5-2x, but that's potentially just a waste of energy depending on the application.

 

Adaptive refresh rate only matters when your framerate is less than the refresh rate. Its less of an issue in today's world where reaching >144 fps is quite easily in any game with the right settings and hardware. CPUs are also far more capable at maintaining the frame buffer than before with the dramatic advancements we've gotten in the last few years.

 

If you're using a 60Hz TV, I'd just cap the framerate at 120 and call it a day. Let the TV refresh 60 times per second with the most accurate frame available. Keeping FreeSync on will at least try to synchronize the framerate and refresh rate so if it does dip below 60 fps, you shouldn't notice too much.

As the 191x7 said, capping frames at 58-59 with V-sync off and Freesync on, actually works pretty good, as when I set 60 or 61 then I getting screen tearing.

 

But it is flawlessly experience when set it below 60fps.

Its largely subjective and game dependent, also varying on what you find acceptable. Its what I've done to get the best experience, largely in games with innate dips in framerate. Warframe being the easiest example where without overdriving it, there's noticeable dips in framerate. Uncapping it makes it smooth.

I know you didn't ask for this but you can also :

(1) use CRU to try stretching the lower bound of your freesync limit (unless you have freesync premium) I got one down from 40hz to 34hz

(2) Buy a 600$ 4k144 monitor with freesync premium. (not sure if its compatible with nvidia's LFC)
