Ryzen 9 5950x on a ASROCK B450M PRO4

I'm planning an upgrade for my video editing rig and would love some advice and insights. Currently, I'm using a Ryzen 7 1700X on an ASROCK B450M PRO4 with an RX 6700 XT. My work involves intensive video editing, so I'm considering upgrading to a Ryzen 9 5950X. To keep things cool, I'm thinking of using the DARK ROCK PRO 5.

Here are a few concerns and questions I have about this setup:

  1. Compatibility and BIOS Update:

    • Is the ASROCK B450M PRO4 compatible with the Ryzen 9 5950X? I understand that a BIOS says that it might work. Has anyone here done this update, and if so, how was the experience? Any tips to avoid potential pitfalls?
  2. VRM and Power Delivery:

    • Considering the power demands of the 5950X, is the VRM on the B450M PRO4 sufficient? I've read mixed reviews about its capability to handle higher-end CPUs. Are there any cooling solutions or modifications you recommend to ensure stability?
  3. Cooling with DARK ROCK PRO 5:

    • How effective is the DARK ROCK PRO 5 in cooling the 5950X, especially under heavy loads like video editing?
  4. Performance Boost for Video Editing:

    • For those who have made a similar upgrade, how significant was the performance improvement in video editing tasks? Are there any specific configurations or optimizations you suggest to get the most out of this setup?
  5. Potential Bottlenecks:

    • Are there any potential bottlenecks or compatibility issues I should be aware of with this upgrade? For example, will the B450 chipset limit any features or performance aspects of the 5950X? I understend that it doesnt have pcie 4.0 but in real world how it will impact the performance.

I appreciate any advice, personal experiences, or recommendations you can provide. Thanks in advance for your help!

PS: the ryzen and the dark rock will arraived next week so I will update this with my findings.

@Jurrunio made a "little" compilation

It's either a 5700X or a platform replacement.

It will boot.

The CPU will throttle, the board will overheat and eventually the board VRM will go up in flames and potentiality kill three CPU and some other parts connected to the motherboard.

That seems improbable.

The Ryzen 7 1700X has a PPT of 129W. The Ryzen 9 5950X has a PPT of 142W. In other words, it only draws 10% more power at max.

The idea that a board that has been running a 1700X fine for years will outright fail when running a 5950X is pretty ridiculous.

I agree that the OP wouldn't be getting the most out of the 5950X, and a 5700X or 5700X3D could be more appropriate, but the idea that the CPU will blow up the motherboard is unfounded.

The fact that an edge CPU was running on the board for years just makes it worse cause the electronics degrade.
