M.2 drive does not work in specific slot

HiJoeK
Go to solution Solved by Tetras,

I'd try updating the BIOS and the drive firmware, there are a lot of reports of MSI & 850X issues with the CPU slots.

Hey! I'm running into something that doesn't make sense.

- I have a WD850X 1TB nvme.

- My mobo has a pcie5 slot, and 2 other pcie4 slots

- i installed the drive in the pcie5 slots and the first time i booted the system, the drive was found.

-  I rebooted and the drive is no longer found.

- I inserted a no-name brand nvme into the slot and it is found. That tells me the slot should work

- I moved the 850x drive to a pcie4 slot and it is found. That tells me the drive works

- moved it back to the pcie5 slot- not found

Any idea why? If it matters the mobo is a MSI mag x670e tomahawk wifi

It's a brand new build and I just updated the BIOS before this 😕

I have a 980 pro 1TB I can use. I just wanted to return it and save some money 😕

Would I notice any speed difference using the 850x in a pcie4 slot connected to the chipset.

The SN850X isn't a pcie5 drive, so no.

I'm willing to swim against the current.

Right. I just wasn't sure if it mattered being connected to the chipset

you will likely see a difference if you have more than one nvme drive connected to the chipset..  as they share bandwith/pcie lanes.

and the cpu has it's direct pcie lanes
