Stereo recording with M-Audio M-Track Duo and Waveform 12

Go to solution Solved by Thaldor,

Let's start from the basics.

1) You have both left and right channel coming from the drums to the M-Track? So, you have both inputs in use.

If not, you don't have stereo audio coming from the drums but only mono channel and it's just the M-Tracks/your PCs monitoring that changes the mono to stereo for your enjoyment.

2) You know how to record stereo, so that you have 2 tracks (left and right) and you have set them up correctly so one is from M-Track input 1 and other from input 2 corresponding the e-drums outputs?

If not, you're again only recording one channel and that is in mono and this time there isn't the M-Tracks/your PCs monitoring making it to seem stereo for your enjoyment.

3) Or more kind of 0) Your drums have separated left and right channel outputs?

If not, you're going to need a splitter because the M-Track inputs are mono so they cannot receive stereo signal.

Hoping I can find some help here. I'm struggling.

I use the aforementioned M-Track Duo for recording my E-drums. I have stereo going in from the kit, and when I listen to the live monitoring from my pc it seems to come out in stereo. However, when I record into Waveform 12, it seems to record onto mono. I can't figure out if this is a hardware or software mistake. I can't find a setting within waveform, and the M-Audio driver "software" is less than basic.

1 -  yes, analog with two separate outputs. I've confirmed that they produce stereo. Even monitored live on the M-Track duo

2 - Input to Duo is analog, output to pc is USB. This could be something to set up in Waveform, as my direct monitor is analog out.

3/0 - yes. Using 1/4 inch mono cables, there are two outputs, one left one right.

Okay, so here's a break down

drums = stereo out into dual mono input

usb = input from computer as well as output to computer for recording

Duo has = dual mono in, dual mono out monitor channel (to my amp), headphone out (to pc speakers)

The headphones and monitor outs will still produce sound when pc is off, of course. When I play without recording, I hear distinct stereo separation. I can test this by setting two drums to extreme left and right and hitting back and forth. When I record into wave form, it seems to record mono.

The Duo, as far as I can tell, acts as a single input to the pc. I don't seem to be able to separate the left/right into two separate outputs. Obviously analog is working in stereo because it's a direct line. I believe perhaps the issue is going to be in Waveform 12, but I haven't tested with say, Audacity. Actually, let me do that before I finish this post.

Confirmed stereo out from USB in audacity, so definitely a problem in Waveform.

At least I came up with a new point of data, thanks for helping me work to that much.

Follow up, Thaldor got me there. I got thinking a little different and found the one tiny box to check. I just needed to be prodded to confirm that the usb was sending stereo, and as I suspected it was software.
