some back story: back in mid-late 2019 my X58 lga 1366 custom built gaming pc started having issues. i.e. boot issues crashing you name it. so since i couldnt afford to upgrade let alone build a whole new pc, so my dad and step mom offered to help out. by sending me some money so i could afford a new pc. so i built an X470 crosshair 7 hero with originally a ryzen 2600 and the board is now home to a 3900xt which i bought about 6 months after the pandemic hit in early 2020.

now fast forward to today i have the same cpu and mobo but have tossed in a 6700xt and a high end 144hz 1080p asus monitor

the issue is i dont really feel like im happy with my current setup no idea why but for some odd reason im just not happy gaming performance is ok for the games i play i mean most demanding game i wanan play would prolly be stray and RE4 remake lol heres the part where im stuck im torn between #1 keeping my pc as it is and hoping at some point i get over hating my current setup #2 upgrading to the X570 asrock taichi mobo i always wanted but at the time couldnt afford alongside one of the 5000 series X3D cpus or #3 jumping to am5 with a new cpu mobo and ram which would cost me around 700$

i guess i just feel lost so many people say sticking with am4 let alone buying a new in box X570 mobo is worthless since am5 is out idk

It'll be dumb to upgrade the board to another X570, you'll get nothing more than maybe some more USB 😛

If you're issue is overall lagginess it may be the 3900X, it's a bit of a diesel CPU, huge power but rather slow, then upgrading to a 5700X3D would make sense if you can't afford an AM5 build, which would be the best solution

If your issue is with not good enough graphics/FPS then you should upgrade the GPU but I think the 6700XT is fine for 1080p

Upgrading to x570 won't make your PC any faster going from 3900 to 5700x3d or 5800x3d would, but maybe first try to run some bechmarks and provide us with results to see if your PC preforms up to standard. When was the last time you had a clean Windows install?

You are not happy, because you are comparing it to Ryzen 5000 and 7000 results. As someone who upgraded from 3700X to 5600X i can confirm that it was a HUGE leap forward, especially in gaming. And then the jump from 5600X to 5800X3D was basically rocket launch forward. Your X470 should support the 5800X3D with no issues, you just have to get it a proper cooling. If i was you i'd much rather stay on the X470 chipset and get 5800X3D + Liquid Freezer III 360, than going out for a new x570 mobo. If you can wait a bit more, there are about to be A TON of 5800X3D + X570 mobo combos going out on the 2nd hand market soon when all of us who have them, jump on the new X870e + 9800X3D combo.

@QuantumSingularity the main issue i have with my CH7 hero aside from it only having 2 m.2 slots is that if both m2 slots are populated the gpus X16 slot aka PCIE X16 which sits below the first m2 slot drops down to X8 which for a 6700xt isnt really an issue but it still sux

@LpoolTech this is an older benchmark i did earlier this yea but i have since updated to the latest amd gpu driver when i did the fresh os install while performance for this game is great given the amount of fps i get i am still unhappy with my overal setup maybe i feel like my X470 mobo limits me idk it does suck that my gpu drops 2 pcie x8 with both m2 slots full

I think you misread the documentation. In the manual for your mobo it says:

image.png.cc24c1c70edb877dddb273bfd39416af.png

So your 2nd PCIE x16 slot will be slowed down if the 2nd M.2 slot is populated. If you just put you GPU in the top PCIE x16 slot, it will run in x16 config even if both of your m.2 slots are populated. The PCIE_x8/x4_2, means this refers to the 2nd PCIe slot, as shown in the diagram further down the manual.

Probably you left all the slots at Auto in BIOS and Asus motherboards are not really clever to figure out if you don't use the other slots, they can reconfigure it in x16 setup and disable the rest. Try manually tweaking them to the first slot being PCIe Gen 3 x16 and disable the rest. Also maybe click on the question mark and rerun the test for the PCIe configuration. Sometimes it gets stuck and displays false info.

Then there is something wrong either with your mobo or your GPU, because both should have no trouble being in PCIe Gen3 x16 configuration. If you read the post below, there are people who run both m.2 slots populated and their GPUs still run in x16 config. Try to reseat the GPU, sometimes that could be the cause as well.

@QuantumSingularity took this from my manual If the user installs an M.2 drive in the upper slot closest to the CPU, the graphics card runs at 8x instead of 16x.

Went further down the manual rabbit hole and in looks like they really didn't wanna advertise the disadvantage of their product on theyr front page. Later in the manual found this:

image.png.49eb018ca9370841202497f50d7ff837.png

If this is the correct version, it makes sense why it's running in x8 configuration and it's honestly extremely dumb move by Asus. The question now is if this limitation is imposed because of the old Ryzen 3000 CPUs because of the reduced count of CPU PCIe lanes (16) and if still will be working like that with the 5000 series where the count is increased to 20. It is still possible that once you drop in a 5700X3D or 5800X3D for it to unlock the additional 4 PCIe lanes if the BIOS is configured properly.

@QuantumSingularity yeah i mean dont get me wrong its a nice board but im just not 100% happy with my setup and for the 600$+ id have to spend on a new am5 mobo cpu and ram idk what to do like do i keep my setup as is and continue to feel unhappy or do i upgrade and stick with am4 or what lol

The problem is that the difference in the CPU generation is just what is needed for that mobo to start functioning properly. The 3900X has 16 PCIe lanes. The 5800X3D and 5700X3D have 20 PCIe lanes. In theory this should allow the mobo to run in x16 config with both slots populated, once the new CPU is slotted in. I just don't know how Asus BIOS works anymore, cause i stopped using them a while ago.

Get a 5700X3D or 5800X3D. Make sure you're on the latest Bios.

@QuantumSingularity i forgot to mention that i have had to downclock my 3733mhz ram to 3000mhz just to get the system to boot otherwise sometimes she would boot and sometimes she would have and throw up a QCODE error and i have no way of knowing if the issue is the ram or the cpu in terms of which one is bad

Running the GPU at x8 may be a bit of a problem on PCIe3

But this is easily fixable, get a $10ish PCIe adapter for M2, and put it in a x4 lower PCie slot

drop in a 5700x3d and you are good to go

board upgrades are completely pointless unless you need something your current board doesnt have or cant do and im not sure if anyones gonna be stupid enough to buy that board for 100$+ so you can swap it to a higher end (used) b550
