GPU works one day and stops working the next

Hi, I’ve recently bought an FE 3070 from FB Marketplace. The card worked fine when I tested it and met up with him. I ran stress tests, used it for a good while and it passed them all. The next morning, when I booted up my PC, it worked fine but about 2 minutes into my new session, the monitor went black and it said no signal. I rebooted it, still no signal. I’ve tried clearing CMOS battery, checking all power connections and nothing. I’ve also tried using different PCIE slots and still nothing. The card was literally working perfectly one day and stopped working the next. I’ve used all kinds of different cables, HDMI, display and still nothing. Any ideas?

 

CPU: 5600x

Mobo: b450 Aorus pro wifi

psu: 850w evga 80+ bronze PSU

Hi buddy,

 

Do you have access to another PC you can quickly plonk the 3070 into to see if it boots or not?

 

Do you have another GPU you can try in the existing system?

 

Try a bench build. Just strip the PC down to bare bones and build it lose on your carpet or a bit of cardboard. You'd be surprised at how many times I've done that and the damn thing just starts to work again.

 

If you can get the system to post, quickly check - Event Viewer >  Windows Logs > System and scroll down to roughly the last time the PC crashed or black screened. If you see an entry or a whole bunch labelled 'nvlddmkm stopped responding' then you can start to narrow down the list of culprits. While it could be any number of things, in my experience the GPU is the top contender but it could also be the PSU.

Forgot to ask, does the Aurous mobo have any diagnostic leds or a 7 segment display that helps troubleshoot?

 

Most boards have at least 3 leds that would indicate an issue with CPU, Ram or GPU.

I just tested it with an old Gtx 1080 and it boots, the 3070 might be damaged

Think you've found the offender.

 

Out of curiosity, what happens when you plug the 3070 back in? Anything?

 

With the 1080 in, were you able to look at the event viewer at the time when it spat the dummy?

aboslute nothing, blank screen, fans spin but just nothing

To be honest, that's kinda what happens to things like CPUs, Ram, Mobos and GPUs. They just die rather than slowly degrade like a car.

 

While not completely out of the question, I'd be surprised if even the seller knew it was about to fail.

 

The only thing you could try now is give the card a thorough visual inspection to see if you can see any of the components on the PCB that look burned, cracked or swollen. You should be able to get a pic of a known good card online and compare. Videocardz is a great place to start for that.

 

You could even completely strip the cooler off, clean the whole card with Isopropyl Alcohol and reapply any thermal paste and pads before putting it back together.

 

I'd say its terminal but might be worth a shot.

 

Did you manage to test the card in another system?
