best gpu to upgrade from a gtx 1660 super. I currently have an i7 9700

So as the title says I have a 1660 super and an i7 9700. I got the cpu for my birthday recently and now I am looking into upgrading my gpu. I was thinking amd but I don't care what brand it is. I would like to play games at high-ultra settings with at least 60fps I don't care about raytacing. My budget is 400$. I've yet to get a monitor, I'm just using an old TV right now so no matter what I have to get a monitor. I was thinking an rx 7700xt and get a 1440p monitor in future or get an rx 6700xt and play at 1080p. What are your guys' thoughts?

I'd get RX 6800 or 7700 XT and a 1440p monitor, though I don't think they'll last that long at 1440p in AAA games if you use ultra settings.

used 6800(xt) or 3080 for ~350$ and be done with it

 

make sure to crank the settings till you arent cpu bottlenecked as the 9700 is not hyperthreaded and there are no worthwhile upgrades on 1151

Problem with the 7700XT is that it can only uses 8 PCIE lanes (wired as such), and your i7-9700 seems to be limited to PCIE gen 3

 

The 6000 series including the 6700XT uses all 16 lanes despite lower performance.

 

The 6800 (non-XT) is only slightly slower than the 7700XT and also has 16GB of VRAM.

 

Why is AMD limiting PCIE lanes on the newer generation of GPU? I dunno, maybe it saves on design cost. Can yell at the sky if it makes you feel better

Can you explain to me a bit more what this means? This is going to be my first pc upgrade so I'm kinda new. What does the amount of pcie lanes a gpu uses do, and how does me being limited to gen 3 effect which gpu I want to get and would it be easier for me to get a 1080p gpu? Thanks

This video explains best. PCIE gen 3 vs PCIE gen 4 with another GPU that can only use 8 lanes of connection.  7700XT outperforms the 4060Ti by a significant margin

It would be easier to get a GPU that is not limited to 8 PCIE lanes. For example the 6800 (non-XT) which closely matches the 7700XT in performance, or the 6800XT if the price is favorable

 

You have already mentioned the desire to game at 1440p. So by settling on a "1080p gpu" you resign yourself to the fate of having to replace the GPU again in the future
