I was surprised to see this, I thought it was only the high end CPUs that this happened to. I have an i5-12400 in an Asus ROG Z760 ITX. For about half a year it had the Intel OEM heatsink but it was damaged shipping it from O'ahu to Maui so I installed a Noctua NH-L9x65 a couple moths ago. I spread the thermal paste thin just on the heatsink, as I've done for over two decades.

I just bought an i9-12900k to replace the i5 and when I removed the Noctua I saw that the contact was only an hourglass or bowtie shape. It really looks like the heatspreader was bent by the tabs on the latch! I installed my new i9 with paste spread on both the HSF and the CPU and then put a little blob in the middle for good measure. Then I ordered a contact frame, plus one for my AM5 computer!

Every single Intel CPU is susceptible to this.

Every LGA 1700 chip bends, it just only really matters on the high end chips because of how much power they draw. The 12400 rarely breaks 65W, and that is easily coolable even with the relatively poor contact.

Cancel/return the AM5 contact frame. That socket doesn't have the same design flaw that causes LGA 1700 chips to bend, plus with how thick these CPUs are bending just isn't an issue. There is no thermal benefit from using one, so the only things that really happen is you technically void your warranty and risk weird memory issues.

Yes it ran fine. I set the i9 to the same 65W and 117W PL1 and PL2 and ran Cinebench, and found that it runs 5-10 C cooler with full coverage
