Running on abit of an old system.

Built this system during Dazmode's 1st annual Canadian Build Mod Comp

I've upgraded the old i5 to an i7 7700k and overclocked it to a 5.0ghz with ease. Want to keep going.

I've since installed a second 560 rad in parallel with the original 560. Moved that 140 rad into the cooling loop at center of pc to blow cold air up the mobo/ram.

I've also swapped out the Peltier plates for smaller ones. As I kept burning out the 300w chips, even tho they get fully covered by the CPU blocks on the center gets cooled.

I then bought some aftermarket water blocks not meant for pc. Essential just a copper tube impregnated into a aluminum heat plate. These now house the two 300w plates for additional gamming cooling. they're powered by a dedicated power supply controlled by a fan header on my Maximus IX Extreme, they essentially shut off during idle, but will kick in when gamming/heating up. While the two smaller ones in the CPU block sandwich are more than enough to keep my water below ambient at idle.

With all that being said. Here's what's up.

Ambient airs 23C

Cold Water temps 19C

Hot Water Temps 32C

CPU idle  22C

CPU stress test can sit 80-95C

Yet as soon as I stop the stress test the CPU immediately drops to 25C ish. So I know the mono-blocks doing its job.

So my finale question is do I lapp the CPU or de-lid it.

I'd prefer to De-lid, but I fear with the Maximus IX Extreme being a Factory Mono-Block, that I won't make contact with a De-lidded CPU

I feel like watching an old JayzTwoCents video where he lapped a CPU to see if the benefit is worth it.

direct die.

I have done both. Lapping sucks ass. delidding is a major hassle afterwards. So if you are going to be going for that last mile, do it right.

Lapping does next to nothing unless your CPU is horribly misshaped, if you want to actually improve temps you need to delid.

If you're gonna delid, do LM between the CPU and the IHS, put the IHS back on, and that should drop the temps ~10C without having to do anything different with the monoblock. Direct die is better, but on a 7700k it really isn't necessary. and given that you'd either need to buy a specific direct die block or a different aftermaket block and figure out the mounting hardware, both of which are going to cost more than the CPU is worth, I wouldn't recommend that. A delid and liquid metal can at least be done with just a razer blade and $15 for a tube of kryonaut, and since the temp drop is still pretty great I'd consider it more worthwhile.

So with it being a monoblock, I can't simply De-lid and keep delidded, there will be a gap between block and die. But liquid metal and re-lid is the way to go? 10c is alot of temp to be worth it.
