Hi folks - just looking for a quick yes or no answer to this one, I suppose! There's a Powercolor 7900 XT Hellhound available brand new for £650 (inc VAT). Worth it at that price now? I think the original MSRP was above £800 when it launched, and it's been stuck at £700-750 for ages.

I'd be upgrading from a 2080ti and ray tracing really doesn't interest me very much, but I do have an ASUS 1440p 144Hz G-Sync display that I wouldn't be able to use the variable refresh on anymore.

Thoughts?

Thanks man, that's what I thought. Pulling the trigger as I type this now then. Figured it's about time.

For anyone else that wants a butchers and is in the UK/Western Europe region;

Deals (overclockers.co.uk) Discounts etc apply throughout July 2024 I believe.

I'll get DDU downloaded I suppose. First time switching GPU brands in quite some time (maybe 20 years?) - so, very excited! DDU will be enough, or is this a fresh install of windows thing these days?

Also upgrading the 3900X to a 5800X3D. Cheapest PC Part Picker found was on CCL for £279.99 inc VAT

It's about time my system had a bit of a face lift anyways. 🫣

Have already updated my BIOS to F4 (Gigabyte X570S Gaming X), but might need to download and install Bios version F5 for the optimisations once it's in and I know it works at least.

Similar performance between them? Looks like it's just a clock speed thing?

i think its like 0.1 or 0.2 GHz of difference, and real world like 1-3% performance difference or look at AM5, but im not trying to coerce you into a full platform upgrade either. 7600 is pretty on par with the 5800X3D

Thanks for the tip there - Haven't kept up with the post 7000 series Ryzen launches, especially so for the retroactive additions to the last of the AM4 lineup.

The 7500F/7600 is about on par with a 5700X3D too but a full platform upgrade is quite a jump

Yeah that pushes me a little over budget when there's still a fair bit of performance I can squeak out of the  AM4 platform yet.

In any case, I appreciate you hearing out my mad ramblings.

In terms of the CPU upgrade, I'm alright to just update the bios and drop it in, right? If I remember rightly it'll want to reconfigure some stuff so may behave abnormally the first time I boot up, yes?

Sort of, but not quite. One of the (very few) perks to the job. The elongated ellipsis infers some displeasure, or perhaps you think I'm taking part in frowned-upon activities. That would be quite the assumption considering you've no idea what I do. Rest assured though; I'm not. It's all legal, and OK with my gaffer, and with accounting. Vendors still get their cut, AMD still gets theirs, and I get my kit.

Anyway, I told them Linus says it's fine. He said they'll just write it off. That's how that works, right?
