Restrict image types or clear EXIF data from all images.

This particularly affects not so tech savvy Apple users. Forum removes EXIF data from JPG files as far as I remember however same does not apply to HEIC pictures which is the default format on iphones.

 

When combined with geo-location data this proves quite problematic as users will doxx themselves on the internet and since forum does not remove pictures or old thread, it becomes a data mine.

 

Case in point, my last report.

There are numerous free (non-malware: no ads) ios apps to sanitize image data including exif.

 

GIMP can do this also.

You dont even need an app to do this, iOS has this built in, its the users that are the problem.

We can only really strip exif data from images that actually get treated as images on the backend, but because HEIF  is only supported by Safari (and other iOS browsers) (I believe due to patent issues), we wouldn't want them to actually embed as images. It is theoretically possible for the backend to both strip the metadata and convert it to a more widely supported format, but that is getting beyond what is practical for us to patch the forum software with, because the image handling code is not architected to support that.

 

It also doesn't look practical to block HEIF attachments, at least not without giving totally illegible errors.

In his video titled "I Visited Apple's Secret iPhone Testing Labs!", he has shown that he makes no effort to fact check Apple's claims, and takes it at face value. People should remove metadata from files before posting them on the internet anyway. Great thing to report on though!

Cleaning geo-location data for privacy reasons should just be normal before uploading anywhere (if you even have it on to begin with). But exif, am I missing something? Where's the harm if people know what model camera, exposure time, f/stop or flash status I used when taking the picture?
