RTX 4070 or the RX 7800 XT

Andres R. Grafals-Rovira

So a couple of weeks ago I bought the RTX 4070 and recently noticed the RX 7800 XT. From what I have seen the RX 7800 XT seems to be 10% faster than the RTX 4070 having 16GB of VRAM instead of 12GB and since I still have a return period I was wondering whether or not to do an even exchange to get the RX 7800 XT. Since at Best Buy these 2 cards are both worth $550. I just want an opinion to see whether or not this is worth it.

It's very much dependent on the game, there are plenty of times when the 4070 is faster. On average the difference between them is ~5%, so really not a big enough difference to care about.

The only advantage the 7800 XT has is the extra 4GB of VRAM, and realistically unless you're playing at 4K I don't see that actually being an issue in the next 4-5 years, and if you are playing at 4K you're not likely to want to keep running both of these cards in 4-5 years anyway. If they're the same exact price, I'd actually rather have the 4070 due mostly to the significantly lower power draw that card has. RT performance is also better on the 4070, and you do get other software advantages like CUDA, DLSS, tensor cores, etc.

I plan to get the 7800XT over the 4070, but I don't see myself utilizing ray tracing that much.

There will be games, thanks to DLSS and ray tracing, that will look significantly better and run at higher FPS on the 4070 than the 7800XT. It won't be most games but there are some

I would look into videos reviewing both cards across many games and keep an eye out for the ones you like to play, see how they do.

If you already have the 4070, I would not switch to the 7800 XT. The only real advantage of the 7800 XT in my opinion is the VRAM but on the other Hand, you have RT, DLSS, etc. with the Nvidia Card.

I have the 4070 myself and it's a fine card for 1440p Gaming and RT:

Depends on the games you actually play. RTX 4070 is better overall if you're mostly playing AAA ray tracing titles. If you're exclusively playing titles that don't use ray tracing, the 7800 XT would be better.

Same dichotomy as last gen, Nvidia for AAA ray tracing, Radeon for overall rasterization. That tracks even up to the 7900 XTX vs RTX 4090, where the 7900 XTX is better overall value outside of AAA 4K ray tracing.

IF pure rasterize high framerate gaming is the target, then the RX 7800 XT would be the obvious choice, cheaper and generally faster at rasterize gaming. A 1080P fast refresh rate GPU, even does 1440P pretty darn well. Unless you need nVidia proprietary tech/hardware like CUDA cores for productivity usage, the RX 7800 XT with more VRAM and great rasterize gaming performance would be the obvious choice.
