Recommendations for gaming laptop? I know next to nothing about gaming but it's a gift.

  • for a 15y/o boy
  • he will also use it for school so Windows preferred
  • Mechanical keyboard or similar preferred
  • RGB heavily preferred
  • the types of games he plays are as follows
    • Fortnite, other FPS games
    • Minecraft (heavy on Minecraft, what he mostly plays)
    • Occasional Roblox
  • my budget is $700-$1,000 and I would like it before Christmas

Mechanical keyboards on laptops aren't common now a days, sort of a dead fad. I think Asus laptops have some of the best laptop keyboards, but I've also had several of their gaming laptops over the years.

One thing I'd figure out is the size, since the difference between a 14", 15.6", and greater gaming laptop can matter if the device is being carried around or not. If its mostly to be used as a portable desktop than an actual laptop, 15.6" or greater are preferred where 14" versions are by far the best middle ground for any laptop that'll actually be carried around.

ASUS TUF 15.6" Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 with 16GB Memory NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 1TB SSD Mecha Grey FX507ZI-F15.I74070 - Best Buy

Probably the safest single recommendation I can make that's within the budget. RTX 4070 for sub $1k is pretty solid. You can probably pick it up locally at a nearby Best Buy as well, just noting the SKU number specifically. If you walk in and tell them you want "SKU:6535503" specifically, they might have one in stock and if not, order it for instore pickup so its not stolen. Could also just order it online for instore pickup.

@Agall's recommendation is super solid.

Just a heads up but laptops especially gaming ones need a yearly dusting out which does involve opening it up when it gets too bad. Else they overheat and stop working properly.

So be ready to do that.

I assume you have a cat? 😛

Fish are quite safe tho. Well except when your water change pumps hose goes loose spraying all over the room but well. Deep clean I guess?
