Laptop for cyber security next year and onwards

Ill be starting a cyber security uni course next year and im in need of a laptop for lectures and school work, the specifications are really low, being:

  • windows 10/11
  • screen size preferably 15"+
  • 16 gb of ram
  • 250+ gb of ssd storage
  • intel 15 new gen cpu or amd equivalent
  • still tossing up discrete graphics or a GPU

Will be used for lectures and coding, so something that has a large battery life and isnt too heavy would be good, unsure with the discrete/non-discrete gpu. Iv got my pc at home for gaming and home use. The budget is roughly $2500 AUD.

You don't need a powerful laptop for cyber security classes.  Something that is lightweight and good battery is really all you need for writing, videos, etc.

Learning to use your desktop as a remote workstation/server.

I took a sumilar course and picked up a cheap M1 Macbook air and was able to do pretty much everything in OS X and could remotely use Windows/Linux VMs from my desktop when required.

Got a shop you'd like to buy from?

Also will you be buying NOW or next year?

What do YOU want to do on the laptop? Cyber security can be done on a 600 aud laptop without much issues and a small ram upgrade.

If you want to play any games or whatever multiple options that fit your wants in budget

I do like MacBooks, however I’m unsure if a MacBook would work with cyber security as the amount of coding isn’t really specified, and I don’t particularly know how to get files to be read on Mac’s via renaming them.

I also don’t particularly know how to code on  Mac's get so I don’t know if it’s worth my time relearning

Coding is mostly the same. HOWEVER your course expects windows so get a windows device. Most likely lots is windows compatible only and doing vms and stuff isnt nice. That and windows for arm will simply not work with everything

So just get a windows laptop. I see this advice all the time and a lot of times this just ends in you needing a new computer after the first semester. Or even first class

Don't know how much coding/typing you are going to do in that field but as someone coming from Geoinformatics I would look for something nice to type on because nothing sucks more than having to type a lot on a laptop keyboard that isn't all that good imo.

I personally like Lenovo keyboards especially on the ThinkPad & ThinkBook lineup.

Desktop: i9-10850K [Noctua NH-D15 Chromax.Black] | Asus ROG Strix Z490-E | G.Skill Trident Z 2x16GB 3600Mhz 16-16-16-36 | Asus ROG Strix RTX 3080Ti OC | SeaSonic PRIME Ultra Gold 1000W | Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1TB | Samsung 860 Evo 2TB | CoolerMaster MasterCase H500 ARGB | Win 10

Display: Samsung Odyssey G7A (28" 4K 144Hz)

Laptop: Lenovo ThinkBook 16p Gen 4 | i7-13700H | 2x8GB 5200Mhz | RTX 4060 | Linux Mint 21.2 Cinnamon
