Is the 7900 XTX worth it if you care about ray tracing?

@FloRolf Ouch. These numbers are looking very rough in 4K. Even if that's not the main use case (PC will be mainly hooked to my 1440p monitor, or Ultrawide 3440x1440 monitor if I decide to upgrade to that).

Oh well in that case you can look at the 1440p numbers on guru3d as well.

They are obviously much better.

https://www.guru3d.com/review/sapphire-radeon-rx-7900-xtx-nitro-review/page-19/#watch-dogs-directx-12

I used to run 1440p on my 4k TV as well for a long time due to performance reasons, it's fine as well but not perfect. Now I have a 7900XT and it's amazing for 4k, however I don't use RT.

I'm all over the place trying to find the right next GPU for me.

I want something that has future proof levels of VRAM, so 16gb at least, to be able to keep up with the latest AAA games such as Avatar:Frontiers and Star Wars:Outlaws, great raw GPU performance to be able to game on my 4K 120hz OLED when I feel like hooking up my PC to it. I would almost certainly say an AMD card is the better fit with these things considered...

But I also don't want to abdicate on using ray tracing features in those games, even if not on max settings and I have to tone them down a bit, but from my experience with the 6700 XT it absolutely tanks performance in everything.

With that in mind, should I consider this card?

The ray tracing performance @ 4K isn't 'bad', e.g. it is generally superior to a 3090, but if you're really committed to it, then yeah, you should buy the 4090.

Realistically you would have to get the RTX 4080 if you wanted to beat the RX 7900 xtx in RT because even though the RTX 4070ti does have better RT than AMD that is mostly compared to the RX 7900 xt not the more expensive RX 7900 xtx. That isn't to say that in some games with DLSS support you can't find cases where the 4070ti might preform better than the RX 7900xtx but I would say on average its not that significant. Also keep in mind that at 4k 12gb of the 4070ti is going to be a problem for certain games and likely only going to get worse in the future.

Well check it out yourself. Here's some Guru3d examples.

As you can see the 7900XTX isn't far from the 4080 but the 4090 is the only one I'd consider good performance.

Keep in mind that most will have DLSS on when doing raytracing. I mean you get basically the same image quality with way more fps. I would imagine it would be the same with AMD with FSR 2

I'd rather turn off ray tracing than rendering 720p on my $1k GPU, but that's just me.

if you care about RT just get an nvidia card, but in alot of games RT just isn't worth it, cyberpunk being an exception.

I'm not willing to spend that much more for a 4090, and have to deal with the whole 12vhpwr situation too...

I don't mind using FSR or DLSS to improve performance and reducing RT settings a bit if necessary to help achieve that.

@FloRolf Ouch. These numbers are looking very rough in 4K. Even if that's not the main use case (PC will be mainly hooked to my 1440p monitor, or Ultrawide 3440x1440 monitor if I decide to upgrade to that).

Both.

I'm waiting for my Gigabyte B650, 32gigs of DDR5 ram (16x2), and Ryzen 7600 to arrive. These parts will form the backbone of my new "main" PC.

As for what I've had before (13400F, 32gigs DDR4), I'm trying to sell it as a kit to get some good money to put into my main PC, otherwise I'll repurpose it into a secondary rig that will stay connected to the TV full time.

I hadn't considered that. Is the end result still a good, sharp image?

I sat around 3-4meter away from my 77" OLED and didn't notice anything bad. Granted this was a pre-DSR/FSR GPU so now it might make more sense to use that on a very high quality setting instead. But again, I'd rather disable RT than using upscaling.

Well the thing is a lot of "bad performance" and "only the most expensive thing is worth it" happens because people try running everything on max settings,  i think you'll be fine in most games if you tone it down a bit (medium settings basically)

not a fan of amd/drivers, but they did improve RT a lot (not a fan of that either,  i think current RT effects look awful) but I'm also not a fan of the "12v situation" so imo go with the amd,  its a good card and better value than current nv offerings for sure.
