5900x air cooler in P500a

maka0

Looking at getting a air cooler for my 5900x in a P500a with Arctic P14 (3 x intake, 1 x exhaust)

I am looking mainly at these TR products as they seem best priced in my country

- Thermalright Frost Spirit 140 ($121AUD)

- Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE ($52AUD)

- Thermalright Phantom Spirit SE ($67AUD)
- Thermalright Frost Commander 140 (119AUD)

After watching Hardware Canucks video, the Frost Spirt or Phantom Spirit seem the best options.

I however do not understand how in their testing the Frost Commander does so poorly compared to the other three.

Also they do not test on AM4 or AM5 CPUs, which they layout of CPU does not have the die in the centre. (so I am thinking a cooler with more heat pipes could benefit a AM4/5 CPU as more pipes are going over/near the off centre die)

Can anyone offer any suggestions or experience with a same/similar CPU+case

I've got the FS140. It is a BEAST of a cooler in both abilities and size. It's WAY overkill for my setup (5600x) and I probably should have gone with something more sensible, but hey, at least it looks cool.

Yeah I'm more leaning towards the Phantom Spirit SE. The NH-D15 is $170-200AUD here

besides thermalright, is something like deepcool ak620 or assassin iii a better option?

For me, there is no better option than Thermalright.

Huge fanboy right here.

AK620, AG620 and Assassin III & IV are all good, although the IV seems to need a specific setup to obtain the best results.

You can also look at the be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4, Scythe Fuma 3 and a few others....

I don’t have FS140, but I have a hard time believing it is better than FC140 and PS120SE regardless of what the review showed.

I have the Dark Rock Pro 4 and was not satisfied with it's cooling on the 5900x

They should've put better fans on it, like the SWP4, SW4 high-speed, or even the PW2 high-speed (lots noisier, though). I guess you COULD try upgrading the fans with something powerful...

Honestly, there are several air coolers that are within degrees of each other, so you just need to look at the top-end ones or get an AIO.

I currently have the Arctic Freezer II 280mm, though want to go back to air cooling.

Currently trying to pick from the FC140 or PSSE120.

I think I am 99% sold on the Thermalright Phantom Spirit SE over the Frost Commander simply on the price difference for identical performance.

Plus I could spend the difference in $$ on fans for the Phantom Spirit SE.

Any suggestions on fans to swap out on the Phantom Spirit SE? I was thinking Arctic P12s

According to this, there really is little difference between the PS and the FS.

According to this and another comparison I saw, the FC is about 8dBA louder at max, and the PS is marginally hotter at all levels. Don't forget to see which one is designed for your CPU, but I would say that, based on noise and performance, the PS is better unless you can get the FC for a lot less.

As for fans, what is your purpose in swapping them? Better performance? Noise reduction? Something else?

Not sure why you would want to swap the fans. The Thermalrite fans are great. At least the ones that came on my FS140 are. (came with a 140 and a 120, both are quiet and move air well.

I've been searching all over for the FC140 and cheapest I found is $110, which is roughly a $40 compared to the PS120SE
As for swapping the fans, I was just getting at for the price difference of the PS120SE to the FC140 I could get better fans

T30s are a sweet choice for PS120SE.

Purchased the PS120SE. Keen to try it out on my 5900x

Just for reference, my Arctic Freezer II 280mm,
idle/browsing 34 to 50ish degrees,
gaming 55-64ish degrees,
CinabenchR23 62 degrees.
PBO negative offset only with stock ppt tdc edc, no frequency increase (varying from -5 to -17 per core).

If you can mount them, the Phanteks T30*. If not, maybe Noctua A12x25 redux*, Arctic P12 Max, AAAWave AF12025-4P-B, Enermax D.F. Vegas, Cooler Master Mobius OC*, Asiahorse Fish-Bone 120*, BlackNoise NoiseBlocker NB-BlackSilentPro PL-PS* and Segotep FE-12, most of which are cheap and do very well, especially pushing air into a heatsink. The ones with asterisks perform almost as well as exhaust on a heatsink - within about 2 degrees of their intake results. The others also do well, but the gap is larger, sometimes very much larger.

I'm staying away from recommending Deepcool Assassin IV because the fan they use for the middle section is non-standard size & shape.

And apparently I still can't find any replacement fan for sale on their site. Even after they get kinda bashed by GN for it.

Too bad really, I was excited when it was announced, because it's an offset type.

There is approximately 99% chance I edited my post

I wasn't excited, and I'm still not. I'm sure they'll replace the fan if it fails. My concern is that it seems to require a special setup to get optimal results. That will result in lots of disappointed users when they don't know that and get lesser results.  At least, that's my impression.

What's so different about that 120x25mm that other 120s don't fit?

Well, that depends on where the owner lives :x

If they live in a country like mine, not even Noctua will, especially if the warranty period is gone already.

Oops its the 140 that's at issue. Well, you're probably right that some countries will have bad support...
