Seeking Advice: Optimizing Portable Data Backup for Global Mapping Missions

Magic_Houdini

Hi All,

This is my first post, so let me know if I need to be in a different spot. I work for a mapping company that sends people abroad to rural places around the globe to drive around a car and take pictures. Currently, we back up the Micro SD cards in the cameras at the end of the day onto one San Disk Extreme Portable SSD before wiping them and reusing them for the next day. However, they've been having problems which has created an opportunity to implement a better workflow. Some considerations for the new solution...

  • We collect around 50 GB of data per day for all of our cameras
  • Trips are around a week long but can be as long as 2 weeks
  • Whatever solution I suggest, I'd like to be less than 1000 dollars
  • The solution needs to be small, portable, and durable (able to get tossed around in an airport)

The options I've come up with

Option 1: Replace the San Disk SSDs with the Samsung T7 Shield

Product Page: Link

Cost: $120 for 2TB

Pros

  • No longer using drives that are known to fail
  • Easy to implement

Cons

  • Only one copy of all the data for a trip

Option 2: Get multiple Samsung T7 Shields

Cost: $240 for 2 2TB

Pros

  • Multiple backups of the trip data

Cons

  • Team members in the field would have to backup to multiple drives daily

Option 3:Get one Samsung T7 Shield and have one SD card for each day

Cost: $640

Pros

  • Multiple backups of the trip data
  • The team would only have to do one backup to the SSD

Cons

  • Lots of small, easy to lose micro SD cards

Option 4:Get one Samsung T7 Shield and have one SD card for each camera for the entire trip

Cost: $620

Pros

  • Multiple backups of the trip data
  • The team would only have to do one backup to the SSD

Cons

  • SD cards would need to go in the same camera every day

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated thank you!
