Web browsers become laggy after downgrade from 16>8gb ram?

Pc specs

Dell xps 8700, i7 4790, gtx970, windows 10

4x4gb ram to 2x4gb ram installed on 2 white tab slots

Using brave for youtubes and web browsingit feels very laggy and very noticeable screen tearing, which never happened before

Task manager shows only 4-5 gb used which looks same when 16gb installed

Dont have any other browsers due to not enough disc space, but even though it never happened before with less than 100MB space

No idea whats causing this...

yes, the browsers using 5gb of ram

that leaves 3gb of ram

the rest of ur pc cant run on 3gb of ram, theres a reason theres ram limits on for example windows 11 (yes ik its win10 but you know what im getting at)

just put ur old ram back in

You are hitting the page file on the drive causing the lag. You need at least 16gb ram for smooth operation.

Added gb ram for clarity

What windows does is it uses up all the ram it can - makes things load faster. What happens when you have a low amount of ram is that if you launch a program that requests a good amount of ram, windows boots off some of the lower priority data into your swap file. The disk is unbearably slow compared to ram, so you get stutter.

Changing the page file size will not help lag issues, all you're doing is letting windows use more of your SSD or HDD memory as RAM and compared to RAM those are extremely slow. If your onboard memory is full or nearly full, changing page file size will have no effect since your stored data will block the space that windows would try to use for RAM. Windows will not overwrite data already stored on your drives for RAM. 8 GB simply isn't enough RAM, you need at least 16 GB of actual, physical RAM installed on your motherboard.
