Orbi RBR50 Router vs AP Mode Question

ChrisLoudon

Hi guys,

I'm usually pretty good at things like this but I'm having no end of trouble with my Orbi's.

To start things off, I have a pretty large network fed off a BT Business Hub that serves as DNS and DHCP for around 50 devices (PCs, Tills, CCTV and so forth).

Given it is a restaurant, I would like to offer free Wi-Fi to my guests but given the size of my restaurant I need to use one or 2 wireless APs to be able to service all areas effectively. The main issue I keep having is, whenever I use a device set to AP mode, anyone on the network (including customers) is able to see all other devices and while most are locked down with some additional security, my Sonos system has been hijacked a few time.

My solution was to use a set of Netgear Orbi's (RBR50 & RBS50) with the RBR50 set to Router Mode and its WAN port (yellow internet port) connected to my existing network. My hope was the RBR50 would then dish out IP addresses separately from my main business router (BT Business Hub) on a different subnet effectively separating the wireless network that my customers were connecting to and the subnet the rest of my business was connected to.

suffice it to say, the above configuration isn't working so either its not possible or there's something more sinister going on.

In Router mode, the RBR50 appears to be working correctly as DHCP and dishing out correct IP addresses but isn't reporting any internet connectivity.

Would I be correct in saying that in the above setup, having 2 DHCP servers is ok as each one is on different sides of a router...

Any ideas?

Cheers

Chris

Does the AP's interface allow you to activate "AP isolation"?

Hi buddy, not as far as I can tell.

The Orbi's do allow for a 'guest network' to be activated on a separate SSID that can specifically be set to NOT ALLOW for clients to see each other.

The real problem I'm having is the existing router doesn't appear to be giving a valid IP address to the Orbi WAN port. Both the main SSID and Guest SSID networks dish out IP address to various wireless clients without issue.

I'm going to see what happens on a different network as I'm starting to think there's either a cabling issue or a problem with my BT Business Hub.
