New game development pc

Go to solution Solved by Why_Me,

Good all around cpu, case with better airflow (2x140mm front intake fans + 1x120mm exhaust fan), low latency RAM, better SSD and a psu with PCIE5.

Budget (including currency):

up to 3000,- euros

Country:

The Netherlands

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for:

Game development, up to 3 screens.

Perfectly content with 1080p.

I'd prefer to focus on overall cost performance rather than getting the latest and greatest.

Other details

I might want to get a new primary screen, up to 1440p, 120hz min

Current Build - Final PC Build (excluding monitor) ~2100 euros - https://nl.pcpartpicker.com/list/vdW6Tn
Build 1 - https://pcpartpicker.com/list/bBjh4s
Build 2 - https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Yygh4s

Build 3 - https://pcpartpicker.com/list/nJpRZw

Build 4 - https://pcpartpicker.com/list/69RRZw

Edit: Added Current Build (Build 1)

Edit2: Added Build 2 with 2x32GB rather than 4x16GB RAM

Edit3: Added Build 3 with RTX 4070TI that costs 850 rather than 1000 euros (This one https://pcpartpicker.com/product/hVqPxr/inno3d-x3-geforce-rtx-4070-ti-12-gb-video-card-n407t3-126x-186148n)

Edit4: Added Build 4, swapped Ryzen 7 7800X3D with Ryzen 9 7900X, VERY similar price and performance for USD, but 100 cheaper for me.

Edit5: Added final build, as per why_me's post

Current Build - $2454 -> I'm assuming I can get the parts for a similar price in euros here.

Solid overall, but you may want to get 2x32GB instead of 4x16. I believe quad dimms is still a bit touchy on stability for DDR5.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

Alright, I'll look into that!
Anything other than that could give a reasonable performance or stability upgrade without an unreasonable increase in cost?

Overall the parts list is pretty cost effective. You could cut some cost with a Scythe Fuma 2 CPU cooler, still very effective and often quite a bit cheaper.

I've added all of the parts to my shopping bin and most of them are ~10% more costly, which is fine. But the ugly part is the 25% higher cost of the GPU, 1000 euros instead of 800. I've added Build 3 to replace that 4070TI with another 4070TI that I can get for 850 instead (https://pcpartpicker.com/product/hVqPxr/inno3d-x3-geforce-rtx-4070-ti-12-gb-video-card-n407t3-126x-186148n)

I am unfamiliar with brands dealing in GPUs, anything here that could be cause for worry?

I've now also added build 4, where I swapped the CPU to a Ryzen 9 7900x, their performance seems to be very similar. The difference for me is that I can get the 7900x for 100 cheaper since the CPU was another part with a large price difference from USD to euros

It's unlikely that the Scythe Mugen 5 rev C will adequately handle a 170W TDP 7900X.

While the 7900X is a better choice over the 7800X or 7800X3D, did you consider an Intel CPU? They tend to have better performance for the use case.

Given a GPU that uses the 12VHPWR connector, you may want to consider a PSU that provides native support of the connector.

Thank you very much for your response, this was exactly the kind of stuff I would want to know about. I'm currently running through @Why_Me's build to see how those parts compare.

Would the parts he suggested run without the issues you mentioned for my builds?

Also from his suggestion I can see that the intel cpu he suggested is roughly equivalent, can you tell me about how they differ for my use case? Does it have to do with game development software (Unreal, Unity, Visual Studio, 3D modeling software) working generally better with an intel cpu?

The 7800X3D is a pure gaming cpu whereas the Intel i7 is a better all around cpu such as content creation, etc ..

The AK620 will cool an i7-13700(F) or 7900X. Although if you have long runs at full load it may be a bit loud.

the 7900X shows slightly better performance in Unreal Engine than the i7-13700K(F),  https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/13th-gen-intel-core-processors-content-creation-review-2369/#Game_DevVirtual_Production_Unreal_Engine. The i7-13700(F) has slightly lower performance than the i7-13700K(F).

In general Intel CPU seem to offer better productivity performance than equivalent AMD except in a few situations.

frankly, you would likely be pleased with either CPU. Although I like the better cooler, higher memory speed and better NVMe drive of the Intel. Sadly though the case only offers a front panel USB-C port as an added cost option.
