Recover deleted SD card

I’m on a trip with a buddy, and he accidentally did the unthinkable… formatted his SD card before dumping it to his laptop…

 

Does anyone know of any tried and true solutions on preferably Mac, but linux or windows would be fine as well?

i've had great luck with Recuva for Windows. had a SanDisk card corrupt the file allocation table and it got all my photos off the card with a deep scan, only two had signs of corruption.
