PC Not Powering On - USB HDD

RicME85

Hey 🙋🏻‍♂️, first post here, wondering if anyone can help.

I bought a recertified WD Elements USB hard drives few months back with the intention of shucking it but found that it doesn't have normal SATA connectors so that idea went out the window and settled with USB. Anyway, the issue is that with the drive connected my PC does an instant power on then off when I press the power button, when I disconnect the USB cable and press the power button it boots fine and I can plug the drive in, can even do it a second or two after pressing the button.

Specs are:

  • GameMax RPG Rampage 850W
  • Gigabyte B450 AORUS PRO

  • Ryzen 5 5600X

  • Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB

  • MSI Radeon RX 6700 XT MECH 2X 12GB

  • Crucial P2 500GB M.2

  • Crucial P2 1TB M.2

I have no mechanical drives other than the WD Elements USB drive so there isn't a massive power draw on turning on the PC.

This issue happens no matter which USB port I use, rear motherboard I/O and front panel have all been tried.
