Looking for the best socket 1151 CPU with a TDP of no higher than 65 watts.

Hello. I have a PC which has the socket LGA 1151 and would like to upgrade from an i5-6500 to the best performing 65w TGP CPU as an upgrade. The PC in question is an HP EliteDesk 800 with a 90w laptop-like power input. I would prefer not to go over 65w because of the other components within the machine also consuming power. Any suggestions on some processors I could use as a replacement?

If you want the best preforming one then get something like this :https://www.newegg.com/intel-core-i9-9900kf/p/N82E16819117993 and underclock it a little.

Same thing with this: https://www.newegg.com/core-i7-8th-gen-intel-core-i7-8086k/p/N82E16819117932?quicklink=true

I hit 700W on an i5 with a NHD15

Also I'm 14 so please just confirm anything I say with someone more experienced

The simple answer is no, but also why? A better chip would likely exceed the power input limitations, especially given the probable wear on the power supply. I'd say you're practically stuck with the i5 6500 and better off replacing the platform.

There's plenty of mini PCs on the market today that accept laptop style power supplies with onboard DC-DC to accommodate.

LGA 1151 refers to two different platforms - Skylake/Kaby Lake (100/200 series) and Coffee Lake (300 series). The OP is on the former, so 8000 and 9000 series parts are not compatible.

Additionally, the motherboard for an HP Elitedesk will not allow for underclocking, undervolting, or any other power tuning options you'll find on DIY boards.

Oh sorry had no idea.

It's really Intel's fault. Not at least calling the new socket 1151-2 or something has resulted in this being a common misunderstanding. I've seen many sad posts from folks here and on other sites asking why an i5 8400 or i7 8700 isn't booting in their board.

Also, the fact that some custom BIOSes for certain boards can give you cross-compatibility makes it feel extra scummy. They claimed that Coffee Lake couldn't be made to work with 100/200 series boards, but that was clearly a lie to force people to buy new boards.
