Mark Kaine

i have an old pentium Fujitsu Ergo Pro X, it has usb ports but i cant get them to work at all. is there any way to install drivers (which ones) or does 98 just not support usb?

Install latest service pack.
I think that came with USB drivers. (it's been a while, im not 100% sure).

When i ask for more specs, don't expect me to know the answer!

98se might or might not but 98 you have to install everything.

if it dont work then might have to buy a pci to usb that's what i had to do...

Oh yeah that was it, Needs SE for USB to work automagicly.

Else you will need to install drivers on a per USB-device basis.

Yeah for XP it was Service pack 3 that enabled USB2 support i think.
Back then service packs did come on CD's.

Maybe your USB is disabled from BIOS? It was typical for computer of that era to have USB off by default.

Windows 98SE has good USB support, even USB audio. So if you have some "gaming"  USB headphones they will be recognized. I have a professional USB to SPDIF tool - and it was recognized in Windows 98. (it's gadget that can be bought new)

Use a PCI to USB card, with VIA chipset. It will be recognized as USB 1.1 with default Windows 98 drivers. USB 2.0 can be unlocked by installing the official drivers.

I have a VIA PCI-E to USB card (basically the same PCI hardware but with an embedded PCI-e to PCI bridge) and I use it on any PCI-E only set up, to run Windows 98 on real hardware. Like on this Coffee Lake refresh platform:
