2nd thoughts about my new PC-build

SiFliegen

Budget (including currency): 2000€

Country: Germany

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Star Citizen, other Gamers

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): 1st time choosing parts and building alone

Hi,

I've spend the last 2 weeks learnign about the new PC-Parts, but Im still not 100% sure, my build is fine/optimizable.

My build so far:
https://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/VtGm9r

Is this GPU too big, the CPU too small, could there be any other bottlenecks, is the motherboard enough or should I go for the X670-chips?

Tyty in advance!!

Tell us more about what you'll do with it ...playing CSGO vs doing video editing are pretty different activities needing different hardwares

Anyway it's not bad, good parts, but I think you can get better for the money

8 cores 7700

Much cheaper good cooler (dunno why PCP don't list it, have to add it as "custom" stuff)

Cheaper SSD

Cheaper stronger PSU

Cheaper alternative AMD GPU,  faster rasterization but worse RT.

Ends up 120EUR less, would like to fit a 7900XTX but it then it's 200EUR over budget...

Thanks alot!

CPU: Is 3.6 Ghz on 8 cores better than 4.7Ghz on 6 or should i compare the Boost Clock Performance?

And why not the 7700X? 8€ more aint that much 🙂

CPU Cooler: I pref. to go cooler than needed

GPU: Just found this video:

Guess the face on the thumbnails sais it all 😄 Im switching to Radeon. Is the 7900XTX really that much better? 300€ for 300MHz...

PSU: The estimated wattage on PCP is way lower. So why do you recommend a stronger PSU?

Hey... I really liked your list. I did however make a lot of changes for the better. I have 30 years experience building PCs. If you have any questions please ask.

The case I picked actually tells you the CPU temps at all times without the need for a AIO. Also I threw in the Radeon RX 7900 XT. The whole thing is a bit over your budget but you can always swap back in the 4070Ti for a lower price. And trust me the extra fans I put in there are really needed.

Hi,
thank you very much for your help! I have a few questions:
1. Why the Motherboard-Change?
2. Why the more expensive RAM?
3. Whats the benefit of the 7900XTX compared to the 7900XT? 300€ more seems like a lot for 300 GHz faster Core Clock

4. If I need to pay a bit more for a silent PSU, thats fine. But why 1000W 😄

CPU : didn't see the price difference, get a 7700X 🙂

Cooler : the one I suggest is as good as the NH D15 for 1/3 of the price, that's not me saying it :

PSU : 850W aren't really more expensive and are more future proof, you'd need that for a 7900XTX or 4080

Note that the Platinum/Titanium "ratings" are just useless, it means you'll eat a couple % less power duh

GPU : the difference isn't clock speed it's number of cores in the chip, a 7900XTX is 20% faster than a 7900XT for only 10%/15% higher price

System : AMD R9 5900X / Gigabyte X570 AORUS PRO/ 2x16GB Corsair Vengeance 3600CL18 ASUS TUF Gaming AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX OC Edition GPU/ Phanteks P600S case /  Eisbaer 280mm AIO (with 2xArctic P14 fans) / 2TB Crucial T500  NVme + 2TB WD SN850 NVme + 4TB Toshiba X300 HDD drives/ Corsair RM850x PSU/  Alienware AW3420DW 34" 120Hz 3440x1440p monitor / Logitech G915TKL keyboard (wireless) / Logitech G PRO X Superlight mouse / Audeze Maxwell headphones

Cooler: Good to know! Thanks for the hint!

PSU: Gold it is
GPU: Im already over budget! I started with 1800€ 🙂 but well... you dont build a PC every year...

CPU : I really think that if you plan to keep your CPU for some years you'll need *at least* 8 cores

I went for 12 cores 3 years ago, it's so comfy, won't get any less  🙂

1. Ryzen loves fast RAM and literately chokes on slower RAM. The RAM you had had a really high Cas Latency so it made the RAM slower than it looks on paper.

2. The ASUS Prime board you picked is kinda bottom barrel so to speak. Its really only for extreme budget builds and I certainly would not game with it.

3. Your right about the GPU on the 7900 XTX, it is way too expensive for the little boost it gives when compared to the 7900 XT.

4. I saw that that PSU was actually cheaper than the other PSU I was looking at that only had 850w, So I figured why not? Its still A-Tier rated and costs less than a lower wattage PSU brand. It certainly won't hurt.

1. First word latency with 10 ns and CL30 compared to 12ns and CL36 doesnt seem like much. Are you sure that 12ns and CL36 ist enough?
2. What is your take on more cores? Would you recommend the upgrade to the Ryzen 7 7700X?

1. I am quite sure about the RAM speeds. If you had the Kit you wanted to get and the one I picked I know you could see the difference.

2. If you are only gaming then the 7600x is more than enough to game and stream/record at the same time. To go to the 7700x means that you also intend to do a lot more at one time.

Giant CPU hog, thanks to the fact that it uses the older Cryengine that is heavily dependent on DX11 which means it wants all the IPC it can get. @PDifolco build recommendation would be mine here, but id argue to run 7800X3D instead.

Do be noted that im using the figures that AMD gives on their Keynote as 7800X3D isnt on the market till april. But trust me itll worth the wait on a CPU bound games.

The Video from LTT seems not too excited about these CPUs.
I guess Ill stick to this final build:

Yeah because most of their issues are with the schedulers. If you read the details, the issues are with AMD being poor in allocating the V-Cached CCDs (basically the X3D's P-Core) and the Frequency CCD (X3D's E-Core). Sometimes a game could run in one or the other, or even both making inefficiencies.

7800X3D meanwhile only comprised of the V-Cached CCDs, its a single CCD design. Hence why it wouldnt be plagued with scheduling issues, although id definitely still check any BIOS updates that includes AMD AGESA microcode update later on.

But your builds are fine. Id definitely go down to AK620 by Deepcool or Thermal Assassin 120 and down to the Ryzen 5 7600 - if you dont need the extra core longevity and wanna focus on the cost compression, both performs neck in neck in 1080p in exception to those that scales well at 16 threads - to get myself a 2TB SSD, but thats up to your style of storing games and recency. If your titles regularly clocks in at the modern 75-100GB, and you like to play many games at the time on the ready, go with the 2TB.

That pretty much sums up my thoughts about my parts 😄
Just ordered all the parts. Ill be jumping around the flat for the next days till they arrive 🙂 thanks alot for your help!!
