RTX 3080 Ti GPUs Are Mysteriously Dying From Diablo IV Beta: Blizzard and NVIDIA Are Investigating These Reports

Summary

An alarming amount of user reports have emerged on Reddit and the Blizzard forums, claiming that the Diablo IV beta is bricking the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti. The Diablo 4 team are investigating these reports of RTX 3080 Ti graphics cards crashing or dying while playing the game's closed beta. Customer support says Blizzard is "working closely with NVIDIA to identify affected hardware configurations and gather as many data points as possible to assist in the investigation."

One Reddit user reported that his Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3080 Ti Vision OC 12G had perished after playing the game for only 20 minutes. According to the Redditor's recount, the cutscene in the chapel was the exact moment his GeForce RTX 3080 Ti went haywire. It didn't take long before other affected users started to pitch in. Another user claims the cutscene also bricked his Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3080 Ti Vision OC 12G. However, users have also experienced crashes during normal gameplay too.

The reported symptoms are identical among the different cases. The system immediately throws a black screen at the user, and the cooling fans on the graphics cards go crazy. Subsequently, no image comes from the graphics card even after a system or several system restarts.

Sometimes these symptoms are also accompanied by an error code and a dead GPU, though not every time.

The user feedback on the original Reddit thread shows that most of the bricked GeForce RTX 3080 Ti graphics cards are from Gigabyte. There was also a good number of cases from unspecified vendors. However, one GeForce RTX 3080 Ti from EVGA reportedly bit the dust too. Sadly, the issue isn't limited to the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti, either. One GeForce RTX 3080 owner and one Radeon RX 6900 XT also came forward, reporting their bricked graphics cards.

One impacted player who submitted a ticket to Blizzard received a reply from the company with a link to its Terms of Service, which states that Blizzard isn't liable for any damage to a machine when running a game in beta.

My thoughts

It appears this is another New World killing RTX 3090 GPU scenario. Although, in the case of New World, EVGA claimed it was poor soldering on a batch of cards and when running at extremely high frame rates; is what was resulting in card failures. So it's possible in the case of Diablo IV bricking or killing GPUs, it's a similar sequence of events; where the game is simply exposing a weakness that may have already been present in the affected cards. JayzTwoCents reported on this first, making a video about it yesterday. He took to Twitter, where he said "If you were denied a @GIGABYTEUSA warranty for your 30 series GPU failure please reach out to me at jayztwocents@gmail.com so we can start putting together data. Thanks!" He doesn't mention what he plans to do with the data, however, this tweet was only made today in the afternoon. It seems since then a few more news outlets have picked up the story. According to PC Gamer, Blizzard is working with NVIDIA to diagnose the issue and hopefully prevent it from happening in the future. As of now, according to data published by Tom's Hardware, a total of 18 cards have been affected by this issue. If you plan on playing the open Beta, maybe hold off until more info is given. I know the beta is only for 3 days, however, it seems that other people besides 3080 Ti owners have also been affected. Therefore, it's better to be cautious in the mean time. I will update this thread as more info comes along. In the mean time, you can simply Google "Diablo IV Killing 3080 Ti" or "Diablo IV Bricking 3080 Ti" to see all the threads posted on various forums regarding this.

BUT DONT YOU GUYS HAVE PHONES?! oh wait that was Shitablo immortals. Blizzard games pretty much died years ago, havent had any interest in playing them. Would not surprise me if it was a menu issue on that cutscene causing an issue, but again its more on shoddy build quality then the game itself.

Yet another possible case of:

  • The gamers most likely to play a new game happen to have higher end GPUs
  • Of those, some aren't configured to limit FPS, fans, etc.
  • Game happens to push GPU to 100%
  • GPU stress test exposes any driver or hardware faults
  • Gamers who experience this post to social media
  • Gaming media reposts social media claiming game breaks GPUs

just started playing OW in January, didn't have so much fun* playing a game for a while,  i love when western devs pull this anime shooter (etc) thing off successfully, i also cant stand first person shooters at all, but this ones different for sure, and its less cringe than unreal/epic (which is probably my most hated company and engine)... diablo (sp) looks boring and cringe af though..

ik ik different tastes etc just saying, OW is fun... and has a deep learning curve, skill actually matters,  in a way its like a fighting game but more complex.

*literally, the voice lines etc are something else, especially if you're a mercy main...

"annihilation is upon them...!"

"affirmative "

"i need help!"

"naja..."

(esp the german lines are hilarious if you understood them, they did such a good job)

In case anyone is even trying to debate this: This is 100% a hardware fault.

No software, whether its a game or driver or stress test, should ever be able to cause physical damage to hardware. Nor should misconfigured fan profiles or basic overclocking.

We are decades past the point where your CPU blows up if there is no cooler installed. There are supposed to be protections in place for this kind of thing and clearly they aren't working.

But to play devil's advocate there is always going to be a small amount of faulty hardware sold. Social media just amplifies the problem.
