Hard Truth about the “Fastest” Gaming Monitor

Plouffe

Have monitors finally jumped the shark? The AW2524H from Alienware refreshes at an eye-watering 500Hz on a colorful IPS panel, but it's a 1080p 24.5" display that comes with a HEFTY price tag. Is it any good?

I love the 3 hour stream vid of this, those longer vids are perfect for background entertainment when I’m busy.

I wonder if anyone outside of the CSGO eSports scene is actually interested in these monitors.

I would expect not, though not just CSGO but any esport.

1080p @ 1000Hz and I'd still hate such a low res. Then again i don't play esports titles.

All the video showing the fast moving images were completely useless information.... But the three seconds worth of still frames from 3 monitors side by side were the most informative part of the whole video as far as quality comparisons were concerned. If only we could get these still frames with added commentary instead of hand waving at fast scrolling blur. (The camera obviously didn't capture it well, nor does Youtube compression help.)

Other than that, it is an overall interesting subject.

videos like these should be 60 fps

60 fps + 0.5x or lower slow motion so people with 120+Hz screens can increase playback speed and actually see the difference

Again advocating for high refresh rate displays when the games intended to run have a tick rate of 128. Even Valve acknowledged that with their Counter-Strike 2 video when they claimed to achieve sub-tick gameplay (which just sounds like Stadia's negative latency all over again), as if that, the latency of your connection, etc. justify such a monitor.

And now a word from our sponsor: 💩

Jokes on you! I can run to the store and come back with a real gaming mouse before a Logitech Master has moved the cursor. 😅

depends, some esports don't have long range fights that need fine display so you're not guessing which pixel to shoot

Does anyone remember the name of the application they used to test that ran locally on the machine?

I made a .png with a transparent background of this for meme reasons.
