Pentium 3 500/550 without backplate

I've recently bought 2 Pentium 3 cpu's for a slot 1 gaming pc and now that they've got here I noticed both didnt have a "backplate", without any heatsink for the die. Is this problematic? And should I buy heatsinks for those cpu's? Thanks

Yes the P3 era is when CPUs really started needing cooling.

So rise up, all ye lost ones, as one, we'll claw the clouds

Will a stand-alone heatsink be enough or should I get one with an attached fan?

You'll realistically need heatsinks with fans. The "passive" PII/PIII/Celerons of the era needed what boils down to direct airflow, so if you got the passive style you'd have to jank in some fans which isn't worth the hassle.
