I9 13900ks instantly going to 100°C under load with a NH-D15, is that normal?

Go to solution Solved by jaslion,

Yeah this is normal. A nhd15 is not capable of cooling a 13900k let qlone the ks.

Try undervolting it that usually gets it somewhat manageable

Hi there,

I've just got my 13900ks and installed it under it NH-D15 with a nice thermal grizzly kryonaut layer between, and to make sure everything was fine I've run a cinebench r23 test.
I've tested it on an open bench setup, but my ram is a bit too tall to perfectly fit the second fan which is around 1cm higher than it should.

As soon as the test start, the temp goes to 90°C and 100°C few secondes after. None of the core went above 5600MHz (and throttle around 5500 after the 100°C hit) and my score is way bellow average at 37767.

Under no load and even right after a cinestress, it goes back to 35°C

Compared to other people with similar setup it felt like I'm missing a bit of my CPU 😞 The score I get is way more than enough, but as some other seem to be able to go up to 40kpoints in the same setup make me think I may have missed something.
Is that normal?

To cool the 13900KS you need a thick 360mm AIO or a 420mm AIO or a custom cooling setup.

Even with a brutal case airflow in a cool room, the NH-D15 might not prevent that CPU from thermal throttling.

Btw, do you use an Intel LGA 1700 contact frame?

Something like this...

Yeah NH D15 isnt capable of that you either need to get a really good aio or Custom loop 13900Ks is a Really powerful cpu

aaaah no, I did not even know this was a thing!
I'll have a look at this.

But thanks a lot to all your answer, I'm now reassured about my cpu (and build x)) being correct

Edit for info, I also got a Cooler Master MasterLiquid ML360R that I was using on my previous build, but i've chosen to "downgrade" to the NHD15 due to the noise. I wont step back into liquid cooling for a moment, as I'm enjoying too much my current, almost silent setup x)

13900K 's are known to max out the cooling capabilities of 360 AIO's

Assuming your case supports it, Artic makes some beefy 360 and 420mm AIOs

Ml360 also wont be able to handle 13900KS and the TBH stock fans on ML series suck so upgrade that to Noctua fans or some think

There are contact frames from Thermalright, Thermaltake, Thermal Grizly, generic on AliExpress etc... all of them work quite nicely.

I agree about Arctic, their radiators are thick and strong, the 280mm one compares to many 360mm ones from other companies.

Their 420mm is a beast.

I have an EK-AIO D-RGB 360mm AIO and I believe it wouldn't be enough for an Intel 13900K. I hope it will be OK for my next upgrade (Ryzen 8000 I hope).

Mostly the pump on top of pretty noisy fan compared to the noctua one. But it was more like some unpleasant vibrating noise that I was able to hear from pretty far away.

I have to admit that I was pretty mad at online test for not saying how loud the pump was.... I feel a bit dumb now x)  That's still the only AIO I've ever run, so I dont have anything to compare.

aaaaah thanks, I've took it to upgrade from a be quiet dark rock 4 and I felt like it was not a huge improvement back then (to not say that it was not one at all and keep a bit of my sanity) Glad to know I did not miss something here and dont miss much with my current nhd15 setup

Thanks! I'll get a Thermalright one I think, it's cheap and based on comment easier to install than the Thermal Grizly. Sound like a good idea to, at least, try it 🙂 I'll let you know if I'm able to get any result out of it.

i had the pump/cooler, and it was very quiet, only problem was the fans 😛

How was that CM AIO positioned and rotated, where was it mounted (front, top, bottom)?

I'm not 100% sure but it was on a normally mountain motherboard (vertically in a be quiet silent base 801, with the pipe going to the right of the CPU, to the cooler mounted on the top of the case on a dedicated moving part. I remember struggling a bit to fit the pipe in the case as they was a bit stiff

Ok, that confirms it wasn't air bubbles that you've heard, that's a good way to mount the cooler. Probably fan noise, eventually the pump.

Let me know about the CPU frame. 🙂

I've just mount it and... still goes to 100°C real faste obviously but damn, dat result

image.png.48f7139418417cb967de023c5eeb5c7c.png

Sadly this is not a perfect test as I've also repasted my CPU with some thermal grizzly kryonaut extreme (instead of classic thermal grizzly kryonaut)
Also, I'm pretty sure all of this could have been mounted way better as... I mean... I know that's ok to say that around but... I've drop few things during the change, like screw, the cooler, cpu backplate... It was a real mess and I really though I've killed it at first.

So thanks a lot for the tip! I would not expect to got from 37767 (best score back then) to ~39500 (moving from 39000 to 39700 depending on the run)

Clearly my best 13€ spent on the Thermalright LGA1700-BCF 😄

I now have a cpu with "ok enough" result, I wont worry anymore. But if anyone know how to spend another 13€ to have the same kind of improvement, I would take it x)

Well, you can try push-pull on the CM AIO if you have enough space to mount it.

Also, make sure to run Cinebench as an Administrator. 🙂
