MSI RX 6700 XT MECH 2X Very High Junction Temps Compared to Standard Temps

Hello, I've just gotten my new RX 6700 XT but i have a problem with it, because the junction temps will hit above 100°C under load while the card itself will stay at around 65°C-70°C. When the load is applied the fans ramp up to 2200RPM even though only 1200RPM should be possible because I've set max fan speed to 50%, ie 1200RPM. Even with an underclock the juncion temp still reaches the high 90s. I don't know what to do, I believe there is a mounting pressure problem with the card but I don't want to open it because it may void my warranty and (since I live in Germany) I could just send it back in the next 14 days without a reason. I know high junction temps are "normal" for 6000 series cards, but with a temperature difference of >30°C to gpu temp? Also the very loud cooler gets very annoying when its always at 80% because of high junction temp...

With 2 fans and a thin heat sink, I'd say that's normal.

My Asus TUF 6800 XT, which is a chonky boi, also have that kind of temps, usually 75C core temp and 95C hotspot temp.

That junction temps in Adrenaline is hotspot temp, which mean the hottest component on the GPU, my personal rule is, as long as it doesn't get above 100C, it is fine.

As for the fan noise, you could adjust the fan curv in Adrenaline, but seeing as at 80% speed, the junction temp is already at 95C, I'll leave it be.

But, you could undervolt your GPU to get lower temps, if you succeed, then you could adjust the fan curve so it won't be noisy.

Go to the custom setting on that Adrenaline software section to tune.

Junction temp is also know as the Hot Spot temp.

It is the hottest temperature reading anywhere on the graphics card.

So even though the GPU is reading only 75*C, somewhere on the die...or the VRM could be the 100*C reading.

 

Underclocking doesn't really usually drop temperatures.

You want to UNDERVOLT and/or use a manual fan curve.

Try it out, but you should see a bit of a temperature drop even with a -25mV or -50mV drop.

 

EDIT:

Quick Google search, a lot of 6700XT owners are able to run 1150mV or 1100mV, and seeing up to 15*C drop in Junction temperature.

Thanks for your answer, but I meant undervolt. I am running the GPU at 1100mV even but Hotspot temp still remains at over 90°C.

Thank you for your answer, but even when I limit the fan to 40% temps don’t change much, the junction reaches 100°C instead of 95°C and the GPU temp also only reaches 70°C. I‘ll probably send the card back because I really do not want a GPU that reaches 80% Fan speed and 100°C. It’s only pulling 160W, which is 30W more than my previous 1060 which has a lot smaller heartsink. The 1060 was at 35%fan speed and 85°C hotspot. (75°C gpu temp)

Well, that particular model is known to have thermal issue, so I'm not surprised.

See if undervolt helps before returning it.

I'm just looking through some of the reviews for the MSi MECH 2X 6700XT.

A lot of review just talk about the GPU temperature, and not the Hot Spot temperature unfortunately...

 

However, I was able to find a user post of them disassembling the card for water cooling.

The PCB is very similar to the MSi Gaming, but the cooler is very much different.

The MECH backplate is just....plastic and doesn't contact anything so that could trap heat under it.

 

My thinking is the cooler / cooler design.

But I'm not all surprised.

The MECH design cooler is MSi's entry/mid-range GPU cooler.

 

I remember when I was in the market for a RTX 3060Ti / 3070 during the GPU shortage.

Saw the local store restock the ASUS TUF model...and drove down there during work to grab it.

When I arrived, the last TUF card got sold ~10 minutes prior.

And here I was, with another dude who was also wanting the TUF card...but the store only had the MSi MECH versions left.

Both of us backed out of the MECH card.
