RAID config. When I change it to AHCI/NVMe mode the bios detects the hdd, but when I try to boot into Windows it bluescreens with the error code BOOT_DEVICE_INACCESSIBLE. Is there a way to add the hdd to the raid configuration or at least make Windows boot in AHCI/NVMe mode?

Yeah not surprised. Changing it from RAID probably changed the driver Windows was using to boot the device. Not sure off the top of my head if you can just run a repair using the EFI tools windows provides or if you will need to do a full reinstall of Windows (assuming you want to keep the config the way you currently have it). Otherwise remove drive, switch back to RAID in BIOS and get that external enclosure.

EDIT: One other thing it could be is that it's trying to boot from your old Windows install and that is what is throwing the error. IF that's the case, then you should be able to fix it up with something like BCDedit or the likes.

Hey everyone. So my mom just bought a Dell Inspiron 15 3511 that came with a 1tb nvme ssd. Our original plan with the hdd in her old laptop was to put it an an external usb enclosure, but we found out that the Dell has an empty 2.5" drive bay so I put the hdd in it. I booted it up, and the first time it got confused but booted up right the second. When I went to file explorer it didn't detect the drive and neither did disk management, so I went into the bios but it didn't detect it either. I noticed for some reason Dell shipped the laptop (which only had 1 drive in it) in a RAID config.

I probably forgot about this comment so quote me if you need a response.

Systems configured with a 54 Whr battery would not support a 2.5-inch hard drive.

The laptop has a 41 Whr battery.

I'd think that's about there not being space to fit one, if it can physically fit and causes boot problems then it clearly DOES support one, its just a configuration issue.

Did you make sure its still booting from the SSD?  That's the sort of error I would expect if its trying to boot from the HDD in a different system so getting confused where the OS partition is.

I tried booting by just pushing the power button and using the boot menu, but both ended with the bluescreen.

Could secure boot be screwing me over?

Are you attempting to boot to the drive that came with the laptop, or the drive from the old laptop.

The new drive will not boot because you've changed the boot mode and will likely need the boot loader reinstalled.

The old drive will likely not boot because it does not have the proper drivers for the hardware in the new laptop or various other incompatibilities/inconsistencies.

Quickest way to solve this is to just reinstall Windows on the New Drive.

Proper way to solve this is to recreate the bootloader using a recovery USB/CD.

I am attempting to boot from the drive that came with the new laptop. I installed the hard drive from the old one so that it would be easier to move files to her new laptop and so that she has an extra tb of storage.

Get this and move files. Then format, then put into laptop.  Takes all the confusion away from it.

There aren't very many files on the new computer so I think we'll just reinstall windows. Thank you all so much for the help!
