(probably) GPU issue

So I finished a new build. Looks amazing. Works... Less so.

With my 3070ti it started up, but as soon as Windows started to load, the screen would go black and the monitor would show no signal. UEFI was extremely laggy and choppy to the point it was beyond painful to navigate.

I tried my old 1070 from a previous system, booted and ran just fine.

Thinking I just had a bad GPU, I RMAed the 3070ti. The 4070ti launched, and came in a nice white card that matched my system, so I picked up one of those instead.

Back to a black screen when Windows loads. Except sometimes when all the stars align it might boot into Windows and run amazingly. As soon as it restarts, right back to being problematic again.

I've noted that after it fails the GPU fans will stop, then they'll all restart then stop again cyclically.

I should note as well that it will boot fine without nVidia drivers installed as well.

  • Windows is up to date.
  • All the latest drivers are installed.
  • The motherboard has been flashed to the latest firmware.
  • Card is seated and reseated and reseated.
  • Cables are all well connected.
  • I removed the ARGB cable extension in hopes that it was the issue. It was not.
  • I replaced my displayport cables.
  • I tried another monitor.
  • I've tried standing on one foot with my tongue stuck out to the left wearing a purple and green party hat.
  • I've run DDU and done a clean install.
  • I've completely reinstalled Windows and installed all my driver's again from scratch.
  • Temperatures are all sub-65 while under load.

I'm completely at my wits end here, about $4500 into what is a very fancy looking paperweight.

This isn't my first build, it's been a long time since I've done one, but I'm not new to the scene.

The thing throwing me off is that when it does run, it runs fine and stays running until I tell it not to run. And it does so well, under load, both under stress tests and while gaming. Most of the issues I can think of, it should have failed under load.

@Digital fusion

I agree with @191x7, also this could be a BIOS revision issue. Sometimes certain PCIe device support is removed to facilitate other support, and occasionally, someone goofs and removes support for CPUs or other components that are still very much relevant. Have you tried rolling back the driver? Sometimes new drivers cause problems as well.

I don't badmouth others' input, I'd appreciate others not badmouthing mine. *** More below ***

Anyone know offhand how to clear CMOS on Asus Prime x570 pro?

Also I just got the stars to align again apparently so I can get any info from the system needed at the moment.

I can't roll back the 4070ti driver as older drivers don't support the new card.

But I did try older drivers on the 3070ti and no change.

There's apparently a new driver out, yours is dated 12/22/2022, a new one was released 1/5/2023. This article is about Linux, but it's possible a newer driver exists for Windows also. I doubt you're the only one having this issue. I've also been told that some older versions of certain boards may not be able to fully support certain BIOS revisions. But are you saying the system boots to Windows on the 4070ti without Invidia drivers installed?

This was the latest driver when I started troubleshooting this issue. But I do see that there is a new driver released the 24th that I'm going to try out. Before I install it, as it will require a restart, is there any more info I can grab off the machine in case it doesn't boot up again?

Windows 11 pro. It was up to date but is currently back one update because I recently did a system restore. However same issue exists with that update.

Was the RAM from the same package/set?

I've just updated to the new Jan 24th driver (528.24) this is the first time the screen hasn't gone black and stayed black after a driver install, so that at least is promising.

I'm updating the missing Windows update then I'll be restarting and see what happens.

Here's hoping that the newer driver fixes it.

But I've also been troubleshooting this all month new so my hopes cautiously not high.

I wonder if the 5800X3D's extras are conflicting with the RTX4070ti? Perhaps simultaneously trying to access a specific port address or something?

Would there be any way to address that if it were?

That said, I have a positive update.

I've gone through multiple successful restarts since finding the January 24th driver.

Too early to say for certain it's definitely resolved but that was unheard of before now.

Schweet. Hopefully it stays that way (likely the reason it was released). As I said, I doubt you were the only one having this issue.

I was thinking maybe RAM instability, 4x 16GB might be taxing on the controller.
