Movies and Shows and Games Oh MY!

Figured I would dump some photos of my movie room and server and stuff because why not..

no particular order, but generally going from most current to oldest pictures.

My wife and I put together the movie room with an explicit goal of doing it as cheap as possible while still maintaining decent quality.

The little klipsch speakers pump out plenty of sound for the size of the room. 5.1 since 7.1 is a little claustrophobic.

Im hoping to add some ceiling speakers at some point, possibly paint the ceiling as well, but it hasn't been much of an issue so far.

the rack shows various stages, starting from one I was using old lenovo workstations.

Now the server is a ryzen 9 5900x and a bunch of WD reds.

I also went through some mighty trials and tribulations so if anyone has questions I can maybe shed some light if they want to do something similar.

The primary Ideology for the build was ease of use, hence harmony remote for example. I think if there is any friction to entertainment stuff, then you just end up not using it.

If anyone ends up doing something similar, here are things to look out for!

Projectors are loud. I have been looking into replacing the fan, but I am apprehensive.

(most) projectors need dark rooms, painting the walls was like night and day (heh.)

the curtain helps with sound a bunch, and imo looks way better than the foam sound mats, its a thick velvet curtain.

couches are expensive, be prepared.

There are website that will print posters way cheaper than buying them on amazon.

ease of use should be a priority.

projector alignment is tricky, more important than vertical alignment is horizontal, if that is off, unless your projector has horizontal lens shift you are SOL.

with 4+ people it gets really hot.

your neighbors might not like you anymore.

Good job, looks nice with curtain. Now you just need a popcorn machine👀

One step ahead of you!

The curtain I think makes it look much higher end then it is. to me atleast it puts you in the movie mood.

And which part was cheap? Even the candy is name-brand.

HA!

well, i guess cheap is relative.

for example, the startech rack was $60 'used' on amazon, however it was literally brand new in box when it showed up, though I attribute that to luck.

mostly waiting for deals, finding compromises and doing as much as possible ourselves.

all in all I think the total project cost between 7-10k, but a lot of that is tied up in electronics (the projector, server, nvidia shield, harmony remote, etc) and the couch was the other big expense.

proper cable management for the projector.

All cables are run in the wall as much as possible.

There is blocking in the ceiling for the projector mount.

The weird distance was due to some stuff being in the way n the attic to mount the projector so we had to shift it forward further than intended.

Got spare room for a stoner with uber munchies right now?

Agree about the curtain it looked nice before with the screen covering the window but the curtain adds extra ooph and better contrast

So, where are the movies?  Are they all DVD, or downloaded?  Just curious because I have a DVD movie library of over 500 DVD and I am running out of space.

I put movies in big black plastic bins in the same closet where the server rack is. DVDs are all pretty much gone at this point. But basically it's rip, throw in the bin and only ever get it back out if it needs to be re ripped.
