Hello all,

A while ago I did my first PC and after some struggle everything seems to be working well, except one thing. That thing is that I sometimes get a black screen when playing games or watching videos (youtube/VLC Player). I have had this issue since the beginning but because it only happened twice a month on average I sort of ignored it because I couldn't find a clear solution. However, in the last 2 hours I got a black screen 4 times, so now that it's getting worse I was hoping someone here might be able to help (of course I also did some digging online already. I will try to give a good overview of the situation and specifications.

PC specs (the ones I assume are most important):

- GPU: AMD RX 6800XT (MSI Gaming Trio X)

- CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5900X

- Motherboard: ASUS ROG Crosshair VII Dark Hero

- Installed software for the above parts: AMD Ryzen Master/AMD Adrenalin/Armoury Crate

The "proces":

1. My screen goes black while playing a video or game (can happen after 5min or 5 hours after starting). Sound and other things still seem to work fine.I do hear the fans getting a little louder after the screen goes black.

2. I turn off my PC using the power button and reboot it.

3. After reboot, when I am back on my desktop screen I notice 2 things:

     - Wallpaper Engine (software for animated wallpapers) is running at a lower fps than normally;

     - The AMD Adrenalin software stopped working and when I try to start it, it gives an error message.

4. I do a full reinstall of the AMD Adrenalin software which requires 2 reboots to finish.

5. Everything seems to work fine again and it's another gamble when the black screen will appear again.

Possible issues I found on the internet:

- GPU drivers not up to date -> I kept both GPU and CPU drivers up to date, did not fix it.

- Broken video cable -> I use a hdmi cable (my monitor only has an hdmi slot), I used this cable with other computers and never had any issues. I also tried using a different hdmi cable, but no luck.

- AMD Adrenalin and Microsoft drivers conflicting -> This seems to be the cause for the error message mentioned at point 3. I read an official post about this on the AMD website and they said that I should disable the auto updating for drivers in windows. I have done this and when I use my PC normally I don't receive this error message anymore, except when I have to reboot the PC because of the black screen, then the error pops up again for some reason.

- Monitor too old -> Maybe? It's a Lenovo monitor with 1920x1080 resolution that I bought 5 years ago. Never had any issues with it before.

- GPU or motherboard part broken/damaged: Maybe? There is a decent chance while building the PC that I messed up somewhere, but I would assume I would have a lot more issues if something is actually broken/damaged.

- Hot temperatures: While my CPU sometimes reaches 75 degrees Celsius, my GPU usually stays between 60C - 70C with the occasional 75C spike when things get flashy on screen.

If you took the time to read all this, thank you <3. Hopefully someone might know issue that keeps causing this and how it can potentially be fixed. Thank you in advance.

If more information is required I will try to reply asap. 😄

Are you running AIDA64 by any chance? Or any other similar software?

What are your Windows power plan settings?

I am not familiar with AIDA64, but for performance/monitoring software I use the ones I mentioned above and CPUID HWMonitor (mostly for keeping an eye on thermals). My windows power plan is set on high performance.

So I did some more searching and found these posts on the Asus forums which makes be believe it can also be a motherboard or CPU issue what's causing the black screens. https://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?127386-Crosshair-VIII-Hero-5950X-black-screens-giving-me-fits

When they are talking about specific voltages etc my brain turns off because I know nothing about that, but I saw someone also mentioning Precision Boost Overdrive. I normally have this set on "auto", so I tried to disable it in the bios and see if that solves it.

Afterwards I ran a few benchmarks and played 4 different games for an hour each. Everything seemed fine, until after playing Valheim for 30min I got another black screen. So still no idea where the problem is 😞

So after getting another black screen it seems that something went very wrong and now even after rebooting the pc my screen stays black.

If there is no solution I think I will just dismantle the pc and sell the parts so I can maybe buy a new one.
