Return 6950XT for 7900XT(X)

Leychee

Hello. I recently bought a 6950XT and I'm sitll within the return period (and will be till February), so I was wondering if returning it and getting a 7900XT (or X) could be worth it.

I bought my current card for about 999€, but I doubt the new cards will be available at MSRP. I'm willing to drop an extra 200€, maybe 300€.

I play on a 1440p monitor.

It's just speculation and opinions at this point since there aren't any benchmarks yet afaik, but I'd like to know yours.

Thanks!

Since you didn't get a good deal on the 6950XT, it's hit or miss.  I'd hold off until the last return day to see.

All depends on the price of the 7900xtx.  And what you feel is okay to spend.  Rumors, but may give you some insight....

It's the same conundrum I went thru when I bought the 6900xt.  But I got such a good deal on it, it solved itself.  It's a hard call but I think you have the time to see what the 7900xtx will be before your return period is over.

Yeah prices in France are ridiculous atm. Can you believe I actually got the cheapest 6950XT...

The MSRP in the US will be $999 but I'm quite positive it won't be less than 1200€ here. On top of that the selection in any store, even online, is extremely limited, I was lucky to even be able to buy new components.

Then I would get that 5800x3d and use your 6950xt.  It'll be a fantastically fast machine, regardless of how well the 7900xtx performs.

At some point, we need to shut off the waterfall of spending.  I think you have a good combo.  Unless you want to look at the 7700x for instance?

Well i'm still holding my purchase but at the same price i don't see how the 7900XTX can be a bad deal. I would return the GPU now and get those money back, so even if RDNA 3 turns out to not be such a great option, the prices of RDNA 2 would get even lower.

Sounds great! How does the 7700X compare to the X3D? The price difference is negligeable, so if I keep my 6950XT I'll return my current CPU and get either one of those.

I'll definitely return my 6950XT if the 7900s aren't crazy expensive, but there's no point in doing it now since I still have 2 months to return it. We'll see!

I think the difference is in the RAM and motherboard,  DDR5-6000 prices near you?  And B650 boards?

It really depends if you want to embark on the new AM5 stuff or rock out the best of the AM4.  DDR4 RAM is cheap as hell right now so that may make all the difference.

It'll be 400€ extra for DDR5-6000 and a B650 board, not including the 7700X, which makes it approximately 850€ total. I'd rather stick to AM4 for now, so 5800X3D right?

And I'm still on DDR4-3000 RAM, I don't know if an upgrade is needed...

yeah because you got a pretty shit deal on the 6950xt in terms of US prices at least, I realize that GPUs cost more there but I wouldn’t pay a grand for that GPU at all (except if we were still in the GPU shortage lmfao)

You can overclock that 3000mhz RAM, so yes ... Stay with the 5800x3d and AM4.

I'm in a similar boat. Just put in an order at Micro Center for the PowerColor 6950 XT Red Devil for $USD 785 and I'm hoping that either prices will drop and I can get MC to reimburse me through a price match, or, I can snag a 7900 XT/X and return the 6950.

/r/buildapcsales seems to generally fall on the side of 6950's only being worth it at $USD 750 or less and to just wait for prices on all cards to fall after the 7900XT/X launch before getting any new card, regardless of team, manufacturer, or model.

Curious to see if you all have any thoughts about that.

MC will price match no issue.  I just did it with the 7700x w/ Free DDR5 when they lowered to $348 and from 5600 to 6000MHz.

If you pay with AMex, you don't even have to bring a receipt or the items.

Trust is strong with the MC.

Yeah, I'm not so much worried about the price match piece, so much as I'm worried that I'll have overpaid for the 6950 when prices could seriously tank a little after the start of the year.
