4k option available on 1080p monitor?

Big sac

Just bought a Gigabyte G24F 2 and I noticed that Windows gives me the option to select 4k resolution on it. The monitor is 1080p so it doesn't make any sense and I don't want to click it in fear of damaging anything. Does anybody know why this shows up and what would happen if I clicked it?

I'm guessing you have supersampling enabled on your graphics driver, allowing you to set resolution higher than native. This is one form of AA but at cost of performance hit. No, it won't damage your monitor as iirc the monitor still thinks it's displaying at 1080p while the GPU does the work of supersampling to "4k". If anything, monitor would display "out of range" if trying to display unsupported resolution.

DSR was already turned off in NVIDIA Control Panel so I still don't know if it's safe to use. Do you have any other idea what it could be?

Displays can report supported resolutions other than native, but usually they're just lower than native. It is possible for a display to accept a higher resolution than native, and downscale for you. This might be provided for better compatibility. I've only ever encountered this on a projector, which accepted 720p/1080i even though it was 480p native.

Typically, if it's not DSR, it is a communication problem between the monitor and GPU. Try a different cable, update GPU drivers, or update monitor firmware.

The graphic card basically can't properly process the EDID information received by the monitor.
