nvme? m.2? PCI adapter?

I'm unfamiliar with those, is m.2 and nvme the same?  If I wanted to get an PCI adapter card that holds at least two of these things, or better more, and works well with Linux (and software RAID), what I should I be looking for?  Apparently these things can get hot?  And I might want to boot from them.

M.2 refers to the physical slot. NVMe refers to the communication interface used. There are M.2 SATA SSDs and M.2 NVMe SSDs. Max M.2 SATA SSD speeds are 6Gbps and M.2 NVMe SSD speeds are dependent on the PCI express generation.
