I saw an image of someone using an index finger to scroll on a mouse, and that seemed weird to me as a middle finger scroll-wheel user. So it got me curious...

Totally awkward for me to move my middle finger to the scroll wheel from the right button.  Interesting. I'm an Index user.

FYI, the musculature of the hand makes it easier to use the Index, as the muscles for the middle aren't suited to that movement.

Sometimes I use index, some other time I use middle.
Index scrolling usually when I'm simply browsing lazily, which means I am using what I call "messy grip", half claw half fingertip grip but very slanted

When gaming most of the time middle finger.
Thumb is back when I still have a mouse with side scroll wheel.

Middle finger covers right click and scroll. I use an index-finger-grip I believe (not quite claw but also not palm).

Me as well when the game I am playing doesn't require me to have lots of shortcuts that I need to access fast and often,
When it does, I right click using ring finger.

I just realized I can (physically) master right clicking with my ring finger. Though I would not prefer it at all. I can't however master a middle (scroll wheel) click with my middle finger in my regular scrolling position. I have to bend it back a lot in order to have the strength in the finger to click the scroll on my current mouse (might be a heavy switch on this mouse though).

Depends, when I'm actually holding the mouse and moving it, I use index finger. When I scroll through something like this thread and the mouse is just sitting on my desk I use my middle finger.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

I personally found that middle clicking goes well or not kinda depends on the mouse's middle click quality.

I personally hardly use middle click as a shortcut in games, if the game doesn't let me change the shortcut button, I use x-mouse to change it outside the game 😆

Very much this. I'm also left handed but can do most things ambidextrous which might be a factor too.

Right now reading LTT im using my middle finger to scroll. But if im playing an FPS...its almost exclusively index finger for middle mouse & scroll since its more natural for faster horizontal twitch movements and don't lose the stability of lifting my middle finger providing stability during fast clicking. Hands are too big for it to feel comfortable using the ring finger for right click.

Middle finger in general, sometimes index. Though hand seems in more relaxed position with middle. Also my index is then already on M1 ready to click when I browse and middle click a link or scrolled to click something. Also I have scroll wheel set as alternate jump for CS, Apex too so.

With mouse in my right hand, I use my left index finger to scroll.

Not on my mouse, but on my Razer Nostromo's scroll wheel. :3

I use it in games, too, for various things. I use the scroll click for stuff, too.

  • 3 weeks later...

I'd never even considered that people might not use their middle finger to scroll, but apparently I'm actually in the minority. It's like finding out there are vehement defenders of standing up to wipe after using the toilet. Maybe it's different mouse to mouse, but every one I can remember has been more comfortable for me to scroll with the middle finger. Plus if I'm in a browser for example, having my index finger ready to left click at anytime while my middle finger scrolls the page saves precious seconds over moving my index finger back and forth. I'll actually use my ring finger to right click if I need both at once, rather than have my index finger leave the left button.
